A few weeks back, Arizona Congressman J.D. Hayworth in his own special Foghorn Leghorn way declared that he was "disappointed and shocked" when Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge suggested that President Bush might be softening government policy on undocumented workers.

I agree with Bush on many things but not his new immigration proposals, medicare spending, the $87 billion gift to Iraq and his lack of concern about the deficit. Montini's obviously a full-bore Democrat and I'm posting this so some Freepers can have another view of Dubya's triangulation technique. Dick Morris gloats with liberal satisfaction every time he speaks of it. As for me, I'm still in the conservative station as the Bush train is halfway to a new Leftward destination.

I'm not sure who is suffering more these days. The so-called conservatives who feel the need to support a Republican who's acting like a Democrat. Or the so-called liberals who feel the need to oppose a Republican who's acting like a Democrat.

The point is that Bush has grabbed the Democrat platform, not that he's a cultural Democrat. Remember that Nixon did much the same thing, signing legislation for OSHA, the EPA, AMTRAK, etc. But at least it was forced on him by a Democrat Congress -- Nixon was holding his nose when he did it. Bush has a Republican Congress. You should get a clue from the fact that this Democrat columnist LIKES the Bush agenda.

Well, dag nabbit, Democrats have a culture of death hovering about them regardless. They embrace it, too. Bush campaigned from the get go on the "compassionate conservatism" theme, so it does not surpise me in the least that he applies himself to government programs related to health care, immigration, etc.

One can only hope he well understands the historic ineptness of givernment when it comes to "compassion," and yet, as innovative and strong as we are as a people, we may be able to whip some of these puppies like the world has never seen AND do it via government as intended by our forefathers.

Please do not ask me to hold my breath, however.

Judging from the (lack of) response to this thread, FReepers aren't too concerned about the death of conservative Republicanism. Oval Office hanky-panky with interns aside, most of Bush's domestic agenda is to the Left of Clinton's. Hasta la vista to English-speaking America, Baby.
