What's the big deal? Those ads are largely inspired by (and the trampolining slam-dunks are more or less a direct steal from) the church scenes in the first "Blues Brothers" movie.

...and if I recall correctly, Dr. J, Zeke and the Iceman were not sitting in the congregation, but in deacons' seating...right where honored elders should be.

Luther is way out of touch here. First off those commercials are a direct ripoff of the Blues Brothers. Secondly it's not the shoes that are a religious experience, it's the GAME, that's why they say "can I have a layup" (that's a basketball term... I'd have asked for a fade away jumper but that probably takes too long to say).
