They say American....but with a flight number like that, I would say its a commuter plane...maybe American Eagle.....likely put in the wrong squak code and were diverted.

Nah, a wrong squawk code would be caught immediately after take-off and corrected without any excitement.

The AA web site does list this as an American Eagle (commuter) flight as you suspect.

According to AA's website, AA4959 is indeed an American Eagle flight. It's listed as a plane type "ER3", which is an Embraer ERJ-135, a Brazilian-built 37-seat twinjet.
