Police Detain Man With Guns In Car At LAX Officers Pull Over Car During Random Check

POSTED: 8:13 AM PST January 12, 2004 UPDATED: 11:08 AM PST January 12, 2004

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles International Airport police said a man was arrested Sunday evening for trying to pass airport security checkpoints with a loaded shotgun in his car.

According to Los Angeles International Airport police Sgt. Robert Richardson, during a random vehicle check at the entry to LAX, officers assigned to the airport security detail asked Sultan Abdul-Malik to pull over his car for officers to inspect. Officers discovered Abdul-Malik had a loaded shotgun and a .22 caliber handgun in the trunk of his car.

"We were doing a routine inspection of vehicles coming into the airport," Richardson told NBC4. "We discovered the subject, he had two firearms. He's being detained for further investigation."

Police impounded Abdul-Malik's car and notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to Richardson, Abdul-Malik never registered the guns.

Authorities said Abdul-Malik has a prior felony conviction. His bail was set at $35,000.

The checkpoints at LAX remained open Monday.

From KABC http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/news/011204_nw_lax_security.html

He is a former football player.

_______

LOS ANGELES — Reportedly, a former USC football player was taken into custody early today, after police found two weapons in his car at an LAX checkpoint.
Sultan Abdul-Malik said he was at the airport to pick up a friend. When police asked, he told them he had a loaded shotgun and a 22-caliber pistol.

He was booked on felony charges.

Police tell Eyewitness News this arrest is not connected to any terrorism activity.

The man told police he had just left the shooting range.

A former USC football player and two others have been arrested by police on suspicion of counterfeiting checks, forgery and burglary, authorities said. Sultan Abdul-Malik, 23, a former Trojans linebacker (1997-2000), was arrested in West Covina on Friday and released Monday, police said. Police Tuesday searched the West Covina house where Abdul-Malik was arrested, seeking more evidence, West Covina police Cpl. Rudy Lopez said. Statements made by two women arrested for allegedly cashing counterfeit checks led to Abdul-Malik's arrest, Lopez said.

I might be wrong, but didn't they say the same thing about the guy at the El al terminal that shot numerous people?

Authorities said Abdul-Malik has a prior felony conviction.

And with a felony conviction, why does this man have a handgun? I was under the impression that a Felony conviction meant that having a handgun in your possession was illegal.

Not just handguns, but any firearms are illegal for felons.

This guy must have spent too much time tackling without his helmet.

"According to Richardson, Abdul-Malik never registered the guns."

Not surprising, since gun registration is illegal.

I might be wrong, but I think a felony precludes all gun ownership unless one petitions the court for restoration.

He isn't a "man with guns" he is a terrorist Muslim with guns...overstaying a student visa by ten years?
We accept these Muslim 40 yr old grad students from blowemupistan and wonder why 'terrorism' happens?
Or maybe he's just a convert...thanks to Wahhabi chaplains in our prisons and military..
