To understand Israeli motivation it is not too elementary to be reminded that many Israelis are surviving remnants of the Holocaust, especially the Jews from Germany and Poland. Early on they vowed to place survival highest on their list of priorities, in contrast to what they considered the relative acquiesence of some Holocaust victims. Therefore, nothing, including their special relationship with the United States, receives a similar priority; as a result, anything that the state of Israel perceives as a threat to their national security can become a target for removal. The same mind set applies to Iraeli espionage against the U.S. In view of the foregoing, which is hardly disputable, a deliberate attack on the Liberty is not that far-fetched.
