The man known as "Baghdad Bob" and "Comical Ali" for his outrageous statements to the media during the Iraq war has returned to television as an expert commentator on Saddam Hussein.
'Baghdad Bob' |
Muhammed al-Sahhaf, Iraq's former information minister, has made several appearances on Abu Dhabi TV in the United Arab Emirates since Saddam's Dec. 13 capture, reports Britain's Sky News.
"Finding Saddam wasn't surprising," said al-Sahhaf, who now lives in the UAE with his family. "However, the way he was arrested was insulting."
Al-Sahhaf, 63, said he and his colleagues did not expect the Iraqi leader to be arrested alive.
"We all were expecting that Saddam would kill himself rather than be caught," he said, according to Sky News.
Al-Sahhaf surrendered to the U.S., but was released.
He attained cult-figure status during the war after proclaiming American forces were going down to defeat even as their tanks moved into Baghdad.
"Iraq has already achieved victory, apart from some technicalities," he said at the time.
In a recent television appearance, Al-Sahhaf said he hoped Saddam's impending trial "shall be fair, not a matter of revenge."
"The expected trial needs evidence to be submitted," he said, according to the British television channel. "Everybody talks about war crimes and the like. But the court considers facts and evidence only."
In the final days of fighting last year, Al-Sahhaf made a number of hard-to-believe claims about Iraqi successes and U.S. failures, including:
- "Let the American infidels bask in their illusion";
- "My feelings as usual we will slaughter them all";
- "We have placed them in a quagmire from which they can never emerge except dead";
- "God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of Iraqis";
- "I triple guarantee you, there are no American soldiers in Baghdad."

True, but he sure would be fun to listen to as an analyst this NFL Sunday! "Peyton Manning?!! Are you kidding? This is not the name of a man! There will be interceptions plenty, I am telling you! Foxboro is not Peyton's place!!"
