1/14/04 (Beckley, West Virginia) The former Secretary of Tax and Revenue, Rob Capehart applauds the two democrat frontrunners for engaging in a series of debates, however after learning what was said, characterizes the exchange as, long on rhetoric and short on specifics.
Neither of them addressed the real problems we have in this state. We have a workers compensation program that punishes the business community and a tax system that punishes the working poor, said Capehart.
Capehart who is the frontrunner in the G.O.P primary has asked other Republican candidates to participate in a series of one-on-one debates in the style of Lincoln/ Douglass.
I think it is good for our party to tell the voters our specific proposals. The time for packaged sound bites, vague platitudes, and quick quips are over. We have some serious problems in the state that need an honest discussion, said Capehart.
Details are being worked out with a first series of debates with the Monty Warner campaign. The Dan Moore campaign has declined such invitation.
Monty Warner: bro of GOP chair Kris Warner, West Point grad, 25 yrs in the Army, WV inspector general
Dan Moore: supported by some more liberal GOP elements, including some of Bush's WV campaign leaders, big money, CEO of Matewan Bancshares.
