For Clark, theres that little matter of Gen. Hugh Sheltons comment the one in which the former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman said Clark was relieved of his NATO command because of character and integrity issues.
Yesterday, former U.S. Army Capt. Paul Bucha of Connecticut, a Medal of Honor winner and former president of that medal of honor society, campaigned here for Kerry.
Bucha said hes known Clark since the two attended West Point together in the 1960s. He had advised Clark to go talk to Shelton about the comment before it became a campaign issue.
You cant dismiss it as a dispute over policy, Bucha said. If youre going to base your campaign on a need for leadership change and all of the ethical and moral questions of the day, then you can not afford to have a question of the underlying premise of leadership brought into the forum.
If there is a question of integrity, there will be an absence of trust, and if there is an absence of trust, no one follows, Bucha said. The issue has to be resolved before this goes forward.
For the Clark campaign, it has been resolved. Campaign spokesman Mo Elleithee said that Shelton has been an adviser to fellow North Carolinian John Edwards for many months, and as soon as people realize that, they know its politics.
Besides, said Elleithee, Bill Clinton has called Clark a man of high character and integrity. What more need be said?

Clark knows exactly why Shelton recommend his early removal from command.
Clark would rather leave the issue hanging out there than have the real truth be known.
