I think it's interesting that the secular govenrment of Singapore made a decision to require teenagers to receive some form of religious instruction because they recognized that those who had it committed a lot less crime.

I disagree with his methods.

I don't believe that tax dollars should be thrown into the hands of "church leaders" to use as they see fit.

While I do not favor "welfare" as a function of our federal government, the only way I would support this initiative would be if it REPLACED other expenditures.

That video was already shown to be fake. He was not drinking alcohol but the media tried to say he was. Even the media had to drop the story when others at the party said he was drinking white soda and not vodka as the media tried to say. When he was drinking, he drank beer and Jim Beam.

I saw the footage when it was up at SmokingGun.com. It IS dated and it was shot when he was governor....and he most certainly was profoundly loaded. I know this doesn't jibe with his timeline on sobriety, but this tape is real and it's a hoot. W looks like he would be a blast to party with. I'm sure he was back in the day.

I do suspect that this initiative, if implemented, will do nothing beyond expanding an already bloated program of wealth transfer.

I'd rather have the option of giving my money to a church of MY choice.

You're so right. W was talking about how he got the federal purse opened to faith-based groups. They were applauding the money, not his faith.

Oh ye of little faith. Here you have an entire speech by argueably the most powerful man on the planet that acknowledges miracles, praises the spirit of individuals, and states point blank that God is more powerful than government. And what do you do? You presume that a group of people are so hopelessly mired where they are that even the power of God cannot alter their fate.

While I love when our leaders talk about Jesus, this faith-based initiative is a pile of garbage. Like any other giveaway it will become corrupt and soon we'll have "Muslims for Homos" signing up and filing lawsuits for their share of our money.

He's a good person at times but he just doesn't get it, and can't stop spending other people's money. It's not compassionate to covet what doesn't belong to you, it's wrong.

I didn't see the tape, but it seems to me that if there was anything at all to it, if there is indeed video out there of Bush drinking at a time after he said that he had quit, his political opponents would NOT be ignoring it. There's no way they would allow something like that to slide.

A "REAL" Christian is a person who folows Jesus, emitating his example. Meek, humble, forgiving (The Pope is a good one, Mother Teresa is another)....The leaders who invoke Christianity to dupe the born-again hillbilies are simply politician.

That's a false choice. No religious leader in America has ever wished for, worked for, or implyed that a theocracy is a good idea. Find one!

However, the current prosciptions on religious expression are clearly unconstitutional. The attack on religion, and Christianity in particular, is beginning to meet w/ a mighty backlash. I for one pray for that day when God and the power of the Holy Spirit return four square to public life.
