The mutual disarmament came amid speculation that the Dean-Gephardt fisticuffs could turn off voters and boost Edwards and Kerry, the two candidates who seem to have the most momentum and most enthusiastic crowds.

"We found out that Dean was taking his ad off the air, so we immediately sent word to cancel ours - we had no desire to run a negative ad, but we're not going to let Dean tear down Dick Gephardt," said Gephardt campaign manager Steve Murphy.

In another twist, a Gen. Wesley Clark supporter and two other lawyers, including Michael Ng of New York, asked federal regulators to probe Dean's sale of $15,000 in Vermont bank stocks as possible insider trading. The Dean camp called that "11th-hour dirty politics."

A Zogby tracking poll has Kerry 5 points ahead, although a Research 2000 poll has Dean at 22, percent Kerry and Edwards tied at 21, and Gephardt at 18 - a statistical tie.

Edwards is at 21% .. How did that happen??
