Mars Rover Makes Its First Moves Forward

By ANDREW BRIDGES, AP Science Writer

PASADENA, Calif. - The Spirit rover took a weekend spin on Mars that doubled the distance on the six-wheeled vehicle's odometer, NASA said Monday.

The slow, nearly 10-foot drive took Spirit 30 minutes, including repeated pauses to allow the rover to snap pictures. The drive was the first forward movement of the rover since it rolled off its lander and onto the martian surface Thursday.

"We went for a little Sunday drive," mission manager Mark Adler said at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Spirit ended up parked in front of a football-size rock scientists have dubbed "Adirondack." It lies a foot from Spirit, within easy reach of its robotic arm.

Before halting, the rover wiggled its wheels into the silty soil to anchor itself in advance of several days' worth of science observations scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Spirit is supposed to reach out its arm and examine the 14-by-8-inch rock with its microscopic imager and two spectrometers, which can detail the minerals and elements that make up the rock. Spirit should then drill into the rock, perhaps as early as Wednesday, to reveal its interior.

Scientists believe it is made of a volcanic rock called basalt.

"You can think of it as a time capsule that contains a history of its formation," said Dave Des Marais, a member of the mission science team.

Spirit's twin, Opportunity, remains on track to land on Mars on Saturday. NASA sent Opportunity to a spot halfway around the planet from Spirit's Jan. 3 landing site.

"Everything is looking good for the upcoming landing," Adler said.

NASA sent the two rovers to prospect for geologic evidence Mars once was a warmer, wetter world capable of supporting life.

This black-and-white image released Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, by the rear hazard-avoidance cameras on NASA Spirit rover shows tracks in the martian soil as it moves away from its lander, visible at upper right. The two rocks in the upper left part of the image are sashimi, left, and sushi, which Spirit will bypass in order to study the rock Adirondack (not seen). I don't know about anyone else, but I find these cutesy names off-putting. "Genesis Rock" sounds a lot better than "Sushi and Sashimi".

I think the Spirit rover is great, but when you consider the incredibly slow pace of its actions, you can see why one space geologist said that an human astronaut on the spot could perform Spirit's entire 90-day mission in a few hours.

How long will the rover be functional in the extreme cold? They have much to accomplish before the computer gives up the ghost.

You are not the only one. There are about 10 of you and you all post here on FR. And at least one of you never fails to hit every single Mars thread. By the way, the scientific benefits of the space program have been discussed at length on countless threads in the last month.

Would you have opposed and resented the monies spent on the Lewis and Clark expedition in the early 1800's. After all, who cared what existed on the other side of the tractless, uselss great American desert, or what savages occupied the western reaches of the continent at that time?

Yet, that expedition and the info it provided stimulated the nation's imaginiation and led to great happenings and the growth of the nation.

That's the same reasoning behind this.

Hope that helps you with the other perspective.
