Muslim, Leftist Hatred for Jews a Virulent Mix (Why do some Jews insist on bashing their friends?)
The Rocky Mountain News ^ | January 10, 2004 | Vincent Carroll

Posted on 01/19/2004 7:57:29 PM PST by quidnunc

The worldwide resurgence of anti-Semitism is real, dangerous and largely unchecked, and Americans should want to learn more about it. A good place to start is Gabriel Schoenfeld's new book "The Return of Anti-Semitism". Unfortunately, many readers will start instead with Abraham Foxman's equally fresh volume, "Never Again? The Threat of the New Anti-Semitism", and get a distorted view of the actual threat.

Foxman is national director of the Anti-Defamation League, which has monitored anti-Semitism for 90 years. Yet his personal politics and compulsion to justify the ADL's domestic agenda at times override his judgment. The result is a lurid book that frets almost as much about the attitudes of evangelical Christians, whom Foxman acknowledges are among Israel's staunchest supporters, as it does about the virulent Judeophobia infecting much of the Muslim world.

Indeed, Foxman doesn't actually turn to a detailed examination of Islamic anti-Semitism until page 194, by which time he has thrown just about everything within reach into his kettle of horrors. Not content to rail against terrifying events such as attacks on synagogues in Europe, vile episodes such as the United Nations' bigoted World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa, and such worrisome phenomena as the rise of Rightist politicians Jean-Marie Le Pen in France and Joerg Haider in Austria, Foxman also wrings his hands about school voucher programs, John Ashcroft's belief that "the Creator" is "the source of freedom and human dignity," George Bush's designation of Jesus as his "favorite philosopher," and Christian attempts to proselytize Jews.

The source of Foxman's fixation on the religious right is this: He believes conservative Protestants wish "to impose their faith on everyone else in America, replacing pluralism and tolerance with theocracy." Never mind that serious sociologists reject such a hysterical view; with the exception of a few crackpots, evangelicals share the same commitment to American democratic traditions as most of the rest of us. No, Foxman sees the shadowed outline of potential fascism in the agenda of social conservatives.

He also gets in the obligatory, half-informed licks against Pope Pius XII (in a full chapter on Catholic-Jewish relations) and continues the ADL's campaign to indict the actor Mel Gibson by associating him with the views of his bigoted father.

Foxman also belabors the influence of homegrown anti-Semitic right-wing groups — so much so that an unwary reader might conclude that the corrosive phenomenon of anti-Semitism is pretty much evenly distributed these days between political left and right, and among religious groups, too — which is, as we shall see, decidedly not the case.

Foxman is so obsessed with the conservative Christians he's beginning to look like he's becoming unhinged.

By contrast, Schoenfeld's book is a model of clarity and focus. As he states at the outset, "it is readily apparent that the Islamic world is today the epicenter of a particularly virulent brand of anti-Semitic hatred." Indeed, "In the Arab world, anti-Semitism has reached a decibel level . . . equaling that of Nazi Germany at its peak." Thus Schoenfeld's very first major chapter is devoted to "the Islamic strain" of anti-Semitism; only afterward does he discuss the alarming situation in Europe and disturbing portents in the United States.

A senior editor at Commentary, a publication of the American Jewish Committee, Schoenfeld is also precise about actual conditions in Europe. Although neo-Nazis, skinheads and ultranationalist anti-Semites are a danger (the latter mainly in Central Europe and Russia), the fact remains that "European Muslims dominate the field in the violence . . . The violence in Belgium, as we learn from arrests made there, has been overwhelmingly the work of Arabs . . . Almost all of the attacks in France, police records suggest, have been at Muslim hands."

He goes on to explain that unfortunately, "If Muslims have taken the lead in perpetrating physical violence, others, mostly on the political Left, have led the way in verbal incitement and abuse." What is new about the resurgence of anti-Semitism, in other words, is not only the export of a violent strain from the Middle East to the West but bigotry's reappearance within the ranks of the secular left. "Today," he writes, "the most vicious ideas about Jews are primarily voiced not by the downtrodden and disenfranchised fringe elements of society but by its most successful, educated and 'progressive' members. This is true in the Islamic world, and it is even truer in the West."

And Schoenfeld provides plenty of examples.

Is it true even in the United States, a traditional haven for Jews? Much less so than in Europe, Schoenfeld answers, but to some extent yes. Like Foxman, he cites evidence of anti-Semitic attitudes within the growing Muslim community, ugly rumblings on college campuses and the atrocious record of leading figures in the black community (Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan, for example). Where he breaks with Foxman, however, is in his assessment of the rest of the anti-Semitic landscape.

Although "the far Right has been a traditional breeding ground for anti-Semitism in this country," he correctly observes, "it is one steadily shrinking in size and influence. The World Church of the Creator, the Aryan Nations, the National Alliance, the Liberty Lobby, the splinter factions of the Ku Klux Klan - occasionally these groups perpetrate violent crimes, but none of them is in the least impressive."

Even Schoenfeld's book would have been stronger, however, if he (like Foxman) weren't quite so quick to impute anti-Semitic motives to bad news reporting and exaggerated political rhetoric, or so willing to see lurking bigotry in overblown criticism of Israel. The Economist magazine was not resurrecting "a time-honored anti-Semitic canard about . . . Jewish avarice" when it used the word "greed" in an editorial on Israeli policy toward the occupied territories. It was using the sort of colorful language it has employed for more than 150 years.

The Vatican's pro-Palestinian policy does not betray "indifference" to the loss of Jewish lives any more than its strenuous opposition to the war in Iraq betrays indifference to American lives.

It is not anti-Semitic to speculate about whether the Zionist enterprise of creating a Jewish state in a sea of hostile Muslims might have been a historical mistake.

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd was not summoning "distant reflections of the notorious Protocols of the Elders of Zion" when she noted the names of several Jewish intellectuals who pushed for the war in Iraq. Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, Richard Perle and other influential Jewish officials have indeed become lightning rods for some conspiracy-inclined anti- Semites, but Schoenfeld (again, like Foxman) seems to believe it is impermissible even to note the possibility that passionate support of Israel can color one's opinions of American foreign policy.

Still, none of these flaws detract substantially from Schoenfeld's overall thesis that growing anti-Semitic tendencies on the left - whose roots "can be traced back to the Enlightenment" - are perhaps the most disturbing new feature of one of the world's oldest hatreds. Mix them with the dark loathing that flows from the Muslim world and what you've got is a distinctively toxic brew.

This is it. The world will soon realize the threat the muslims pose to the rest of us. In the near future, everyone must forget political correctness, and realize that these people have brought us nothing but violence and deceit and they must be stopped at all costs.

Exactly. Must watch out for those fundamentalist Christians while conveniently ignoring that they are they most ardent supporters of Israel other than the Jews. Of course one must except self-hating and American-hating Jews such as Noam Chomsky. And never mind the fanatical islamic terrorists sworn to Israel's destruction.

Why do some Jews insist on bashing their friends?

They walk in the dark and worship Satan by rejecting the God of Moses and the Son of God...Very simple.

When it comes to its views about Christians, the ADL should be listed as a hate group.

You have answered your own question. You have justified Foxman and convinced any Jew who is leaning to the right to run as fast as they can back to the Dems.

Remember, America is the Great Satan, Israel is the little one, ask any Iranian.

Truly, some will run from the truth into the pit...No wonder Pride leads the procession of the 7 deadly.

1 Kings 9:6-9 -- "But if you or your descendents abandon me and disobey my commands and laws, and if you go and worship other gods, then I will uproot the people of Israel from this land I have given them. I will reject this Temple that I have set apart to honor my name. I will make Israel an object of mockery and ridicule among the nations. And though this Temple is impressive now, it will become an appalling sight for all who pass by. They will scoff and ask, 'Why did the Lord do such terrible things to his land and to his Temple?' And the answer will be, 'Because his people forgot the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and they worshiped other gods instead. That is why the Lord has brought all these disasters upon them.'"

Isaiah 65:11,12 -- "But because the rest of you have forsaken the Lord and his Temple and worship the gods of Fate and Destiny, I will 'destine' you to the sword. All of you will bow before the executioner, for when I called, you did not answer. When I spoke, you did not listen. You deliberately sinned--before my very eyes--and chose to do what I despise."

1 John 5:9-12 -- "Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son. All who believe in the Son of God know that this is true. Those who don't believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don't believe what God has testified about his Son...And this is what God has testified. He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. So whoever has God's Son has life; whoever does not have his Son does not have life."

Just quoting the Word of God...take it or leave it at your(their) peril.

Yes, True.

Yes, True.

Regarding Saint John's statement:

Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the testimony that comes from God."

Yes, True.

And God has testified about his Son. All who believe in the Son of God know that this is true.

Is that in the Torah AND the New Testament, or only the New Testament?

Those who don't believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don't believe what God has testified about his Son...And this is what God has testified.

That doesn't add up. Someone, let's call him "Muhammad", could just as easily well claim the Koran says something or other, and anyone who doesn't believe it is saying that 'G-d is a liar', Heaven forbid. Is that a logical error or am I mistaken?

He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. So whoever has God's Son has life; whoever does not have his Son does not have life.

G-d communicated with mankind since the creation of Adam, the first man.

In the time of Moses, a prophet of the Lord, G-d gave the Torah as the law of the Israelites. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, and Solomon did not know about Jesus.

Jesus knew about them, just as we nowadays know about them and Jesus.

You mean telling Jews they worship satan isn't a good way to support Republicans? Who would have thought :>)

Like most stereotypes, even Abe's contain some element of truth.

There is no valid or rational reason...This is why I fall back on the Old Testament that continuously tells of the Jewish people worshiping false Gods and being condemned for it...From my experience the greatest condemners of Israel have been Godless (liberals predominantly), including people who are by definition Jewish, and Islamofascists (who liberals feel sympathy for).

(Why do some Jews insist on bashing their friends?)

The more appropriate question is why so many Jews insist on bashing themselves (ourselves).

Jackson - you get it, exactly correct. Yes, we have far superior arguments. Yes, a Jew by all logic should be Republican. Conservatives support Israel, are against terror, against discrimination - how could Jews not support Republicans?

Jews have suffered terribly at the hands of Christians and it’s only in the past 75 years that this has improved to the point where Jews and Christians are developing trust and working together. When a Jew is called a follower of Satan, it is taken seriously, very seriously. Not that long ago, this was a prelude to blood being spilled.

I have lurked on many liberal sites and read all types of unbelievable garbage there, however I have never read at any liberal site that Jews are Satan worshipers. On the other hand, this slander is occasionally found here. Do you understand the reaction Jews have to this? They read this and run.

If it is our intention for conservatism to become the big tent for everyone, then this must stop. Alienating and insulting your potential friends and supporters is counter-productive.

Both sides have their share of bigots. The left may well make better use of them, but remember we're trying to change the minds of those with defined opinions.

The Jews walk in the dark and worship Satan *rap you see on the thread does nothing but reinforce the stereotype or right wing bigots. I'd speculate these "White American" bozos, and their compatriots today, would call themselves "conservatives"

Foxman's paranoia is completely in line with the Left's consistent view of America, he leaves out only its hatred of capitalism. Christians have always been their target. Foxman just does it as the head of a Jewish organization.

I am not going to get into a pissing contest with you, but you would not even exist today if Jesus didn't come down, die on the cross, inspire American Founding Fathers and rescue you from Hitler's socialism...If it was not for Christianity this world would be ran by secular socialists or Islamofascists.

Never ever forget that...You are saved, sustained and supported by Christ Almighty. You reject Jesus Christ, you reject Yaweh...Hence you worship Satan because you reject the Son of God.

"Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they do." -- Jesus Christ
