A new Internet virus was spreading fast throughout Asia, Australia and Europe but computer security experts were divided on the seriousness of the threat from the "Bagle" worm, and reckoned home users were most at risk. Experts expected some impact in the United States when people returned to work Tuesday after a holiday weekend. The "Bagle" or "Beagle" worm arrives in an e-mail with the subject "hi" and the word "test" in the message body. If the accompanying attachment is executed, the worm is unleashed and tries to send itself to all e-mails listed in the user's address book. Sometimes the attachment is designed to look like a Microsoft calculator, said David Perry, spokesman for antivirus software firm Trend Micro Inc. The virus only affects machines running Microsoft Windows operating systems. "It's clumsy," Perry said from Lake Forest, Calif., adding that most people knew better than to click on an attached calculator: "I don't get e-mails with calculators in it, do you?" The worm started spreading on Monday and most corporations have already protected themselves against it, Perry said. Carey Nachenberg, chief architect of Symantec Research Labs in Cupertino, Calif., said home users, not corporations, were most at risk because companies had protected themselves quickly. "We could see this fizzle out in several days," Nachenberg said. "Or we could also see a lot of people infected" if they don't update their antivirus software

Nice of them to spell it out. Too bad they don't mention alternatives to the virus-prone pit that is windows.
If 95% of the world used Linux, there would be people pushing alternatives and complaining that Linux is a virus-prone pit.As someone posted the other day, most of the excitement over Linux is driven by a hatred of Microsoft, not by the superiority of Linux. Yes, I use Redhat Linux on one of my machines and like it a lot, but I'm not operating under the false presumption that Linux is an ultra-secure miracle from God. It has its good and its bad points, just like the Windows and Mac OSs.
See my post #8.
I suppose that the writer really meant to say A new Internet virus was spreading quickly...
Don't you just love the new trend in journalism? The last time I checked, fast is either a noun, verb, or adjective. It is hard as a parent to teach my children to speak properly when they are continually bombarded with incorrectness such as this. I never cease to be amazed at the errors in written assignments that I see coming home from my childrens' teachers, even in a private school, and by the errors I see in emails at work written by high-level executives in the Fortune 100 company where I am employed. It is hard for me to accept that grammar and usage are no longer important.
After my wife's system was hit three times I switched her to SUSE. Happy camper ever since. No fear from the junk email and viruses thrown her way. Her LINUX system just does not allow anything downloaded to execute, email or otherwise.
... and the free games are cool and keep her busy.
The software doesn't execute the attachment---the morons using it do. PBKAC.
Good wifey! Good girl! Sit!
It is my opinion that those who write or speak for public consumption should make sure that they set a good example of usage and grammar, since learning by example is what we consciously or unconsciously end up doing.
Ditto on that, will you allow your wife to read your post?
Only a complete moron would open anything without knowing for a fact what it is.
