DANBURY — Pete Snopkowski had been napping, and though the telephone woke him, it seemed like a dream. The caller had seen an article about Snopkowski’s car being stolen and was offering him a new car.

"Unbelievable,” as Snopkowski is fond of saying.

The 55-year-old disabled Vietnam veteran’s car was stolen on a frigid day earlier this month. He left it to warm up unattended — turned on with the keys inside — while he warmed up inside a Thorpe Street tavern. Snopkowski had used the 1988 Dodge Colt station wagon to travel to odd jobs.....
