You'll get flamed for sure - for some reason, FR is a well spring of Atkins disciples. I wonder if it has anything to do with common INTJ traits.

Anyhow, yes, you are correct - the whole issue is balancing caloric intake with proper excercise. Oats, potatoes, rice, pasta, fruit/veggies, no butter/margarine (olive/canola oil), moderate portions of lean meat, etc. is all anyone needs to stay in shape.

The genius of Atkins is that it appeals to people who feel compelled to eat. Compared to sweets, cookies, fries, etc. I suppose meat is better, but still, the whole point is to make eating 6 days out of 7 a task, not a joy.

Save the 7th day to pig out on anything you want, as long as you can get back on track for the next 6 days.

Over on Usenet a while back, I remember reading some post in which some Einstein *insisted* that eating pork rinds all day is good Atkins behavior and a sure way to lose weight!

Interesting idea. Could be. I think we have a lot of INTJs here on FR.

So for the totality of humanity with all its variations and body types, it's a one diet fits all?

Well said. Atkins has a place in trimming down the morbidly obese, but for your average person trying to watch weight, it's just bad nutrition.

Athletes or anyone in a job requiring much stamina would be foolish to consider starving themselves of carbs.

These fads come and go, and get more headlines than the obvious ways to stay healthy. Eat natural rather than processed foods. Vary your diet. Prefer protein sources other than red meat. Exercise.
