The president made many valid points as he went on the offensive in this final State of the Union speech of his first term in office. He defended his policies and decisions, including the right of the United States to defend itself.

That piece glosses over the amnesty for ILLEGAL aliens issue, just as Bush did in the SOTU.

It's just wrong, and for so many reasons.

I don't think he "glossed over it" In fact, he specifically said he was against amnesty.

No, he glossed over the issue saying he is opposed to amnesty while simultaneously proposing it.

I don't think congress will pass anything on immigration reform before the end of this year. Too many conservatives oppose Bush's proposal and too many liberals think it's not enough. This is going to drag out for a long time and ultimately some watered down version of what he proposed will be passed. But it won't be this year.

I hope you're right. Did you hear the "rumor" that Bush was going to make it happen by Executive Order? It's just a rumor but a scary thought just the same.

. . . thank you for posting this insightful editorial -- even the papers in MD are more evenhanded than some here at FR!

Did you hear the rumor that the rumor was a total lie?

Let me be the first to tell you: it's a flat out lie; and it's absolutely impossible for him to do it by EO anyway.

Was there anything in that speech to get excited over? Quite frankly, I got bored and stopped listening. I was hoping he would try to redeem himself by announcing a plan to privatize SS, which in my mind is about the only thing he can do right now to redeem himself, but instead we got a small spending wish list, tax cuts, more illegals, etc. Wake me up when it's over....

I never said there was any validity to the rumor. I just said it existed. In fact, I've researched EOs based on that rumor and it has little to no chance of happening. More on EOs

I'd like to Bush sign an Executive Order Directing the Armend force to patrol the border with Mexico.

Maybe the governors of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, etc. can call out the National guard to do this.

I know, it's wishful thinking on my part. Sigh.

I'm with you there. But it's not likely to happen. We can't be offending the invaders from the south, ya know.

Here's something that isn't a rumor

The United States has "unsigned' the 1998 Rome Treaty that would put America under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court treaty that Bill Clinton signed on Dec. 31, 2000.

The Bush administration took the unprecedented step of "unsigning" an international treaty because, well, simply put, it doesn't trust the international community. Dubbed the "Rome Treaty," it puts signatory nations under the jurisdiction of the International Court at the Hague, grants ICC prosecutors extraordinary powers and grants ICC officials lifetime immunity.
