I was not alive at the time? I know he lost but I have no knowledge of the McGovern campaign beynd teh fact that he had some looney wealth give away program? What was his position on Vietnam? Kerry voted for the war and is not saying we should not have fought the war only that Bush has fought it badly. Was that what McGovern was saying or was he for giving up and leaving Vietnam? Kerry said he would internationalize the Iraq occupation (whatever that means) and stay on.

I wasn't alive at the time either, but his campaign was liberal on social issues, economic issues, and foreign policy. He advocated for a withdrawal from Vietnam, but not an immediate withdrawal and for the Vietnamization of the conflict. He voted for the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, but he quickly became an outspoken critic of sending American troops to Vietnam. Sound familiar?

He garnered 38% of the popular vote in 1972 even with his stint in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War 2 and flew 35 missions in a B-24 and had a distinguished record.

So Nixon copied his platform when it came to Vietnam? From what I remember McGovern was a very weak candidate - no fire in his belly did he also have a crazy VP candidate?
