The 2004 Democratic nominee probably will cede the South and border states, as Gore did, because Democrats are too secular and too culturally liberal. The question is whether cultural and religious values will cost them votes in states like California that the former vice president won in 2000.

I think they'll lose the south more because of the region's fiscal beliefs than cultural and religious ones. The south has its secular populations who still lean conservative because fiscal issues take precedent. The blue states seem to vote as if they don't understand capitalism or there are simply too many socialists.

One and the same. That's how socialists get to be socialists. If you understand ANYTHING about capitalism you can't be a socialist, IMHO.
