I am afraid that I have to ask, WHO this thread (#1) threatened, to the point that it is now hidden.
Who wants the info on the first thread out of site?
No, not Mr. Robinson, but rather the unknown (to me) names, who kept complaining.

Quite appropriate that the privilege of "last post" went to Cindy, considering all her contributions and hard work.
Let's make this one just as informative.

Here is the reason for locking the thread and moving it to chat (if you go to the old thread, you get this:)
Locked on 01/26/2004 12:22:49 PM PST by Sidebar Moderator, reason:
The size of this thread is causing FR to slow down whenever it is accessed. It is going to be locked and moved to the chat/general interest forum. If anyone wants to post a 'Part 2' thread, go ahead, but post it to chat. Thank You
To: Mossad1967
Thank you so much for starting Part 2 for us. The information in the previous thread was outstanding and the work that many put into it was awesome!
That being said, I don't understand why the original thread was locked in the first place. The reason that was given doesn't hold much water in my opinion.
Keep the info flowing!
To: nw_arizona_granny
>> Who wants the info on the first thread out of site?<<
Technical reason is hogwash IMO. The database isn't loading thousands of pages of that thread per view. Even refreshing the DB index is trivial at 15 thousand records. If the number of posts was 15 million, I might buy it.
Shrug, the reality is too many whiners didn't like the thread for various reason so the Admin succumbed.

The reason for locking the previous thread may not hold water for you, but believe me, every time any of the moderators attempted to access the thread the entire system slowed down. There is a known problem with how the database software works and John Robinson has not yet fixed it.
If we were trying to hide something, we could have just pulled the thread. We didn't. We merely locked it so that no more replies could be posted. The entire thread is still visible to anyone who wants to read it.
We then invited participants to start a new thread.

DoD Homeland Defense Official Convinced Terrorists Would Use WMD
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1065706/posts WASHINGTON, January 26, 2004 -- If al Qaeda and other terrorists were given even "half an opening," they would use weapons of mass destructions within the United States, said DoD's official responsible for homeland defense.
Paul McHale, assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense, addresses members of the Reserve Officers Association Jan. 26 at the group's mid-winter meeting in Washington. McHale encouraged reserve officers to continue the fight against terrorism. Photo by Sgt. 1st Class Doug Sample, USA

"That's a chilling but hard reality," Paul McHale, assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense told members of the Reserve Officers Association here today. He said he's personally convinced that "we must be prepared not only to defeat such attacks, but, God forbid, to respond to them."

Somebody under the moniker of mercy (who obviously had none, lol) was griping. It was spooky to see the grey lock down bar across the top of the thread...a twinge of panic hit here as I wondered what was 'incoming' aside from the snow.
I still don't think it bodes well... it seems they had to free up the news section for upcoming events.

Mossad, thank you for part deux.
Tubavil, thank you for part one of the most fascinating and insightful thread I've seen on FR in a long time.

Hi Mossad1967. I was waiting for someone to create Part II! Thanks. The move to chat by the mod makes much sense.
To: Sidebar Moderator
You have to understand that most people on this (and the old thread) are at least slightly paranoid, so they think of the "conspiracy" type explanation first. :)

Fair enough.
I don't understand the programming problem but it's not the size of the thread causing problems when all of you are posting and reading.
The problem comes up when one of you posts an Abuse Report, for whatever reason. When the moderators access the thread it puts a huge load on the system which is increasing as the thread size increases.

A request for help from any Tennessee Freepers:
There was an article posted in "The Tennessean" this past week (1/23 or 1/24, I think) about continued security lapses at the Oak Ridge nuclear facility. I have searched extensively through their archives and have even Googled it, but so far no luck in finding the article to post.
Did anyone else out there read this article, and if so, any help in posting a link would be greatly appreciated.

"...every time any of the moderators attempted to access the thread the entire system slowed down. There is a known problem with how the database software works and John Robinson has not yet fixed it."
That is reasonable as no one would want to slow down FR especially with 02/02/04 looming, but I wish you had announced that prior to locking it up. Thanks for explaining it on this thread.
To: Sidebar Moderator
"When the moderators access the thread it puts a huge load on the system which is increasing as the thread size increases."
===
Interesting. Maybe the system tries to load all the posts on the thread. Since most threads are not anywhere this long, it probably isn't worth to try to do some programming, so it only loads the 10 or so posts before and after the post the Mod is getting a report on. I can see, how the system trying to load over 10,000 at the same time can create problem.
I think the system is probably set up, so when we access it, it only loads the 50 or so posts on one page, and the system can handle that with no problems.
To: FairOpinion
You have to understand that most people on this (and the old thread) are at least slightly paranoid, so they think of the "conspiracy" type explanation first. We're not paranoid. Why would you say something like that? Are you out to get us like the rest of them? Next thing you know, you'll try to follow us around like the others, you know, the guys in the trench coats with the dark glasses. And don't even get me going on those damn helicopters. Someone stole my hat. Where's my hat? Oh there it is...

From Thread I:
Unless you are sitting behind some really good firewalls and have very good antivirus software then be careful where you go. I am serious. These people are hacking and if they can get personal info on you then I don't know what they will do with it. They are using Java programs to do who knows what. And I don't mean to trash your computer...so it must be simply to get information about you. I may be a victim myself. I found evidence that Java web start had been used without my knowledge. And I found files in my root drive with Arabic letters for file names. I am worried quite simply. So please be careful and leave the scary web site searching up to those who are seriously set up for it.
Where in the root drive did you find the files? I'd like to take a look what's lurking in mine.

Since it wasn't the number of posts, but rather, people hitting the "abuse" button frequently, I'd like to know why this thread generated that kind of reaction from so many people. (Maybe EOM or Daleel disapproved of the thread- :))
To: FairOpinion; Sidebar Moderator
"You have to understand that most people on this (and the old thread) are at least slightly paranoid"
ROFLOL...the moderator would have to read the entire part one with all the links in order to really comprehend the timing of the move to chat, one week before the countdown ends, had a tinge of the surreal (as in a Clancy novel.)

To Sidebar Moderator,
Thank you for your prompt answer.
I felt that we had put many links and information in the first thread and in a week it will be gone from the view as most will not know it ever existed.
I have been reading at Free Republic for about 2 1/2 years and rarely look in "Chat", as a rule, I am not a "chatter".
At least we still exist and for that I thank you,
Ruth

Thanks a lot for the ping! I was hoping the thread wouldn't die. There's a lot of valuable information gathered on the first one.
To: Domestic Church
Do you think I need it? Why, I'm not paranoid. Nope not me. No monsters in my room. They stopped following me last year when I set the trap.
To: Velveeta; FairOpinion
Thanks for the links.
Velveeta, that link is very similar to the article I read, and seems to be based on the same info.
To: liberallyconservative
There was an article I read this AM on the news side about Oakridge and I'll try to find it....now we have to jump forums to search.
To: Old Sarge
Thanks Sarge!
In that area, I've been worrying about 4th generation weaponry for a few months...may have to re-think my planning around general hazard mitigation based on that.
To: nw_arizona_granny
Locked threads aren't gone from view. They merely cannot be added to.
I will put a link to the original thread at the top of this current one so anyone interested can see it
