In the last off-year elections, Bush's popularity helped to elect Republicans against the usual trend and at the dismay of Terry McAuliffe and his fellow Democrats. If we let Bush get away with that, he might try it again.

You love to bait people don't you? Why?***
To answer your question above to FirstPrinciple,
BECAUSE he likes to debate by using unfair statements. He likes to put other people in the wrong, just to make himself look ...uh...clever. And he has no use for the TRUTH, just as long as HE wins the debate.
Sad, isn't it?

The number one issue in this election is national security. Exactly!
Which is why proposing an amnesty for illegals (yes, it *is* essentially an amnesty, and there's no point hashing through that anymore) is simply backwards.
How can our leader on one hand say he supports a strong defense against international terrorism but on the other hand weaken our own borders by condoning illegal entry into the country?

Let's start over!
If you will look at the Government figures of GDP over the years starting in 1930 at: Historical Tables of Budget you will see that our GDP today is much higher and the surplus at a lower pecentage than in the 80's.
For example, I looked at three different years below (in billions):
1983 -- GDP: 3,440.5 with a -6.0 deficit
1993 -- GDP: 6,558.4 with a -3.9 deficit
2003 (projected) -- GDP: 10,756.8 with a -2.8 deficit
Now you can take a percentage and you will find out that today's budget of President Bush doesn't come anywhere close to the deficit percentage wise of the GDP in 1983 or in 1993.
That is why when someone compares budget numbers, you have to take into consideration the GDP and percentage of the deficit. There are dollars wasted in the budget for programs that are not my first choice, but there is also the pork added in Congress for districts in order to get their votes.
All in all, I do not think that the deficit is or should be a #1 priority. All that happens when the deficit goes away is that more money is available to Congress to spend even more. Tax Cuts at least give them less to play with. Did you see a major tax cut when there was no deficit in the 1990's?

why is it considered sush heresy to disagree with certain policies and be vocal about it? Serious question for you. Do you write letters to your congresmen, fax the WH, write to the President or send in letters to your editor?

IF you don't care about what this President has done for our military, and for our safety and security, about his strength in defending America, and freedom around the world, YOU are not the type of person I want on MY side, Joe.Very well stated!

Where did you get I was a phibetakappa? PhiKapMom is from my son's fraternity -- PhiKappaSigma -- obviously you have not been on here very long because that has been discussed before when we were asked how we got our names. Not to mention PhiKapMom says I am a Mom. My son's fraternity is called the PhiKaps or Skull House on OU -- they wanted me to do Skull House Mom as my screen name. They were over at my house when I had to pick a name. So they then came up with PhiKapMom! Now do you understand?
Why are you so nasty? I was out doing research on the GDP for your information!

Veto is an important presidential power. Overuse has it's double-bladed aspect as well though. The President holds his nose about signing certain things just as we all sometimes have to in life.
I believe he tries to choose his battle wisely. He is also negotiating with Congresscritters and Senators from both sides of the aisle. It's the fact of the matter.
