I'm not talking about pork projects, even--although Bush is responsible for everything he signs. I'm talking about HIS initiatives, like expanding Americorps, "21st Centruy Jobs," the new Marriage Initiative, the drug-testing initiative, the "homeownership" initiative, etc., etc. No one to blame for these but the President, because he invented and announced them.
But there is simple a thing called reality that I must follow. And that reality says that there will NEVER be a candidate that will match my wants and needs 100%. Never. So, I have to vote for the one that most closely matches those expectations.
And GWB is still the man.
That said, I will respect anyone who applies this rationale to their choice- GWB or not. But I would also hope that those who will not vote for GWB this time can also respect the reasons why we choose to support him. None of us are ever going to agree on the why's, the what's, etc. But for God's sake, all this mud slinging is getting old very fast, and makes us look no better than the scum slingers on the left.
Here's how it has been working lately. A spending bill comes up - Congress wants 400 billion, Bush say he'll veto anything over 375 bil, they send him a 389 billion bill, and he signs it.
For me, a big spender President would ask if 400 was enough, how about 410? An obstructionist President would veto anything over 350, force a veto override and lose support for any of his pet bills (oh say like defense spending for the war), a realist conservative would slow spending as much as possible while using the compromise to build up support for key issues....like the war.
But that means knowing you'll win some and lose some in the nasty system of Washington. ('Democracy is a terrible form of government but it is better than anything else' attitude)
Exactly. Also many forget that a veto from the president can be overwritten by Congress so it becames law regardless
