Great info, William. Do you know if this was the same group of Iranians that were raided in France...and who set themselves on fire? I recall this story from last year and couldn't get a clear picture if these were people we should be supporting...or if we should've been pissed at the French for rousting a pro-democratic Iranian movement. I remember there was a lot of confusion about just who these Iranians were, at that time. Was it this MEK group?

Did you expect to attend a meeting where the Speakers would expound on the glories of Allah, and the honors of killing American soldiers, or innocent men, women, and children? Obviously no one would support such a group (except, perhaps, some extremist liberals). No, the speakers would try to be logical, respectful, while raising doubts of the war's roots. People generally don't, after all, provide money to someone acting the bloodthirsty bomb-thrower. But they might give money to someone who appears reasonable, even if you have doubts. It is in their interest to appear docile.

Then of course, you attempt to tar Ney by accusing him of being McCarthyite, a zealot, someone with no oversight to question a group's connections. You attempt to undercut his integrity by insinuating he is somehow in cahootes with "America’s number one enemy in the war on terror, Iran."

Pot. Kettle. Black.

If they would be, or would not be, useful is secondary to my point, which is that this was not some harmless humanitarian fundraiser.

And given how they were aiding Saddam right up until the toppling of his regime, including in attacks against the Kurds, I am not sure that I can buy the idea that they turned a new leaf.

status as a terrorist organization should be reviewed
Recently, they sued along with another group to get their name off the terror list.

One of the attorneys arguing the case on their side was Ramsey Clark.

FWIW

Case closed. That pro-Saddam nutberger won't represent anyone who doesn't hate America.

Let's see here. Congressman Ney or Ramsey Clark....

I got to go with Mr. Ney on this one :-)

Why Ney wants Ashcroft to do an investigation of that Northern Viginia Society of Iranian Americans that had that dinner last week.
They are MEK front group. MEK is against regime. Trita Parsi (who is president of NIAC) and an advisor to Ney, is pro -regime.
Some of what this "troll" said, was true. However, I think he may have been MEK himself. It is a cult. (IMO)
BTW - these plans for trips to Iran that NEY is organizing for other congressmen and senators, will UNDERMINE the democracy movement in Iran. They will lend legitimacy to the regime. People are encouraged to write to their congressmen and senators to tell them NOT to go.

"DoctorZin Note: Once again, I ask you to write your congressman and ask them to stop these initiatives with the mullahs of Iran. It disheartens the popular movement against the mullahs in Iran. It creates fear in the Iranian people that we will betray them for good relations with the mullahs. Remember, the mullahs are the very reason we are having problems in Iraq. They are the true terror masters.
"Ask your congressman to stop this madness!"

"DoctorZin Note: We need to contact our congressman and let them know that the people of Iran do NOT want us to conduct such meetings with the Islamic regime in Iran. The people of Iran fear that this will only provide legitimacy to an illegitimate government. Write them now!"

"those who chatted with him Wednesday over Persian chicken in a room off the office of House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., were Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and Reps. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, John Larson, D-Conn., Doug Bereuter, R-Neb., and Vic Snyder, D-Ariz."

Love your tagline.

I think nuconvert has it mostly right- while I am not sure I buy that Ney is 'pro-regime', I do think that the trip being planned probably works to stabilize the regime.

I am sure that some think that is a wise idea considering the attacks on our troops in Iraq- get the area calmer and hope for the best.

I think that thinking is naive, and akin to trying to win the left-leaning-independent vote by boosting funding to the NEA.
