On January 2, 1959, Castro and 600 of his bearded rebels marched into Havana wearing new uniforms taken from the former national army, and riding on captured or appropriated vehicles, including Sherman tanks supplied to the Batista regime by the US government. Thoughtfully, Fidel left the scoped .30-06 Winchester Model 70 rifle he'd carried since he and eighty-one others landed in Cuba from Mexico on the boat Granma in December of 1956 in his hotel room. Where it was stolen.
He replaced it with a Belgian FAL rifle, ordered from the manufacturer by Batista but delivered after Castro's rebeldes had siezed power. When the Brigada 2506 invaders struck at the Bay of Pigs a few years later, the FAL was the rifle he carried when he arrived at the scene to meet the invaders. More recently, he's been seen carrying a grunt-issue Kalishnikov.
Hot Damn maybe they still have these Shermans--maybe even in running order! After all the Cubans operate so many other aged motor vehicles perhaps the tanks are among them.
