Thank you, xzins! Great slides.
These drivers are becoming legends...Pony Express, Mad Max, convoy supply drivers in Iraq => CPA Briefing with Brig. Gen. Boles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GEN. BOLES: I've had six soldiers, unfortunately, be KIA- ed, killed in action, since we have been here. And I have 181 soldiers that have been inducted into the Order of the Purple Heart, who have been wounded in action.
Of those soldiers, though -- it's a testimony to our great medical team -- of those 181 [soldiers], 134 have been returned to duty and are back serving with us now. And the MEDEVAC (medical evacuation) system has worked very, very well for our soldiers.
In terms of the up-armoring of the humvees (HMMWV) and the up-armoring of other systems, what we've done -- it's really been a combination of two things. One is, our industry base back in America saw the challenge that we had and quickly has brought systems forward for us and brought us additional doors that we've been able to put on, and some other systems and windows, which has just provided protection. So we've been able to add on.
Our own soldiers have their own skunk works, which over time they've developed. They'll put sheet metal on, put sandbags in certain places, put additional sheet metal on. And we have instances where that's saved lives for our soldiers.
It has been said that "Amateurs study tactics; Professionals study logistics."
We seem to have them both covered up with professionals.
Beans & Bullets win wars.
That's a great quote by the way. I've heard it but don't remember who gets credit.
(We'll give you credit for today. How's that sound? :>)
That map graphic showing the distance from Kuwait to Bagdad as being equivalent to the distance from Tijuana to San Francisco blows my mind. That is a helluva long ways!
Lots of opportunities to get shot at!
Wow! Thank you for showing all the enormity of what's been done. It's unbelievable. So much hard work and dedication, so much accomplished in a short time, and the media will never say a word. I hope the average Iraqui appreciates it. They have to unless they're complete fools, and I don't think they are.
GNFI SUPER BUMP!
Just got back from Fort Hood day before yesterday where the III Corps, 1st CAV, 7th ID, 39th INF BDE (among others) had their flag casing ceremony. My son was one of those in the deploying group.
The "First Team" Horse Detail did their charge. 20,000 heading out - be there soon!
Best to all!
It has been said that "Amateurs study tactics; Professionals study logistics."The saying as I always heard it was similar, but a little more powerful: "Lieutenants study tactics; Colonels study strategy; Generals study logistics." (That also approximates the officer education system in the US Army, and, I believe, the other forces).
I'd like to make a few points:
- Not only do our officers study this stuff, but our long-service Warrant Officers and NCOs do too... and everybody from the generals on down will listen to a guy with a good idea, even if he wears the mosquito wing of a Private E-2.
- I'm surprized that nobody mentioned the famous Red Ball Express of World War II. That was a transportation command, made up mostly of what the then-segregated Army called Negroes, that kept fuel, ammo, and food flowing to all the advancing forces in post-D-Day Europe. These people are the direct military heirs of those often-forgotten heroes.
- General Boles's men (and women; lotsa gals in a support command these days) have far outperformed other elements, for example the 46th LTF whose support of OEF in Afghanistan was just horrible. Maybe it's Boles's leadership; maybe it's lessons learned in the smaller theater. WHich brings me to...
- One of the Army's great strengths is its quintessentially American ability to adapt and improvise. That shows up in things like the hasty development of gun trucks... which brings me to...
- One of the Army's great weaknesses is its quintessentially American ignorance of and disdain for its own history. In 1944, 1950, 1965, 1991, 1993, and again in this war the Army discovered with the joy of a newborn throwing his spoon that gun trucks were a good idea. No sooner will the bullets stop flying than the Army will remove the guns from the trucks and resume not-training drivers and support troops in their use. You just watch!
Anyway... good page. I saw the slides on Defenselink yesterday and thought FReepers might like to know about them, but I didn't
do anthing about it (and all these graphics must be murder on anyone on dialup!
