I decline your offer.

As does my friend, David Quackenbush.

We, and almost all Americans, remain firm in our judgement that the Civil War was about Declaration issues, but we wish no injury to our friends to the South, and we hope to work for limited government and respect for life, liberty, and the God who gave them to us now, in the present political world.

Those of us who see Lincoln as a model of Declaration statesmanship will work for these things, and, I hope you, who do not, will also work for them.

My best to you,

Richard F.

I see little reason to doubt that the South paid disproportionately more of the tariffs than the North, not a higher gross amount but more per capita.

Planters had a taste for expensive imports than the north for several reasons not the least being the differences in religious backgrounds, and the prevalence of the "Capitalist Ethic" in the North vs the "Cavaliar mentality" in the South. Plus there could be cases where importing from England to Charleston even with the tariff was not much more expensive than having the same article made and shipped from Chicago. But a buyer in the North would find it cheaper to get it from Chicago.
