GOP tax opponents criticize Chichester (Ask RINO to leave, go to Dims)

Anti-tax Republicans say Senate Finance Committee Chairman John H. Chichester should get out of the party - maybe even become a Democrat - for advocating $2.5 billion in new taxes.

But Chichester said yesterday he is not going anywhere, and he branded his toughest critics within the GOP as out of touch with mainstream voters and the needs of the state.

Larry J. Sabato of the University of Virginia said the rift could force the front-runner, Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore, to take a clear stand in the intraparty debate over taxes and spending.

But Kilgore refuses to take an ironclad vow against higher taxes, apparently to avoid alienating GOP-leaning business leaders who favor the Chichester plan or a more modest alternative by Gov. Mark R. Warner, a Democrat.

It's time for all in the GOP to choose a side, both locally and nationally.

Country Club business Republicans favor higher taxes cause the sheeple will be paying them. Its no skin off their nose to advocate a tax increase precisely cause someone else will foot the bill.

I worked with Chichester 19 years ago in his failed LG race (He lost to Doug Wilder), and I called Wilder's office the day after the election to congratulate them by saying "the better man won."

Even though Wilder was far more of a liberal than Chichester, he didn't go out of his way to hide the fact. "Johnny C." tried to pass himself off as a "rock ribbed" sort of Republican, but about a month into his campaign (and I was under contract), I could see he was little more than talk - an expedient, squishy type of Republican if there ever was one. I tell you what, though, he had a lot of the right in VA fooled for a long time.

As for your point, yes, when given an option you do have to decide what type of Republican you want representing you: Tax and spend mod/lib,...or "Cut it now" types. Cut it now!

I have not seen G.W. raise taxes. Some of his other ideas are quite liberal, but, he hasn't raised taxes to my knowledge.Yet.

New budget coming out tommorrow, supposedly scaling back on his tax cuts.

jeff frederick defeated jack rollison, who supported higher taxes, in the prince william republican primary last year and went on to win in the general election...its time to get the rinos out of the virginia republican party...

A bump for conservative Virginians with some principles.

We need to see more of this accountability across the country. And if they want to be RINOs, then find a conservative candidate and defeat them. Republicans who want to match spending with or exceed the spending of Dims aren't worth voting for. Actually, it's probably more dangerous to vote for them than Dims who do the same things because, once they take over your party, the conservatives are excluded from the party and you'll end up with only two flavors of liberal to vote for.
