I opened this thread to learn the meaning of ZOT!

I'm an old man and I guess I'm not 'with it' on the argot of the net.

I read the entire thread and never did learn anything about the term. I'd appreciate some info (without flames) so I can learn the shorthand.

P.S. Is 'flames' still cool to use?

That's right, and that guy's account was suspended and yours wasn't. After you've been here a little longer, you may also start to get an idea of what will get someone banned.

Hope this helps you Bill:

The history of "Zot".
There are one or two individuals who, for whatever reason, enjoy signing up new accounts here every single day to post leftist drivel. Sometimes they are vanities from DemocraticUnderground. Sometimes they are articles from other far-left sources. Sometimes they are nothing but vile doctored images or profanity laced tirades. Sometimes they are from legitimate sources but happen to strike the eye of the poster as being something that would infuriate conservatives.

The posters in question always post the articles, and then don't reply. They then post other articles, again not replying. This was going on for months. Jim would confirm by looking at the IP addresses and other aspects of the user's 'footprint' that it was the returning troll, and we would nuke the accounts. This went on for months.

Then some of the opportunists who wanted to harm the forum started a whispering campaign, complaining about articles being deleted. They would play off of the fact that the trolls' articles were being pulled to complain that there was some sort of agenda of squelching legitimate conservative postings going on by the moderators.

One day I decided to try something new. I decided, instead of letting the trolls get what they want and have their posts up as flame bait, and instead of pulling the threads outright, I would move their post aside and replace it with something that hopefully others would find humorous. I would do this out in the forum for all to see. The original piece would be available through the history link for the curious, who could see if there was some sort of censorship campaign going on. And the freepers could have fun mocking the troll if they so liked.

It so happens that the way I did it the first time was using a screen shot from Caddyshack, where the pastor gets hit by a lightning bolt. Being a bit of a fan of the comic strip "B.C." I captioned the photo with the lightning bolt sound that Johnny Hart used in his strip- ZOT! That is where the term Zot originated.

Now, sometimes we "zot", and sometimes we simply pull it. It depends on a number of factors, including how busy we are at the time. But whenever you see a Zot, you can be sure that the user was a 'newbie' who was doing their hit-and-run posting, and that if you as a well-established freeper thought the article would have made an interesting discussion, then you could probably post the same piece yourself without incident (although the most vile of the stuff probably would get pulled, and Jim reserves the right to remove anyone who he feels is constantly trying to push leftist propaganda on the forum). Anyway, that is the history and background behind zotting.

I looked for a Zot explanation but couldn't find one. Basically, when some new lefty/terrorist supporter (troll)comes on here & starts posting anti-Conservative/anti-American stuff, instead of killing the post, they replace some of the words in the title with "Zot" and ban the person so that the thread doesn't go away. It's also the word used to call attention to a troll in posts. People still get flamed for making lame comments, but deserving to be flamed doesn't necessarily rise to the level of being Zotted. Does that help?

Thaks for the reply. I also got a much longer one from an administrator with background and info on the origination of the term..

I'm not sure the information posted was worthy of a zot, however. It appeared to be a well-researched item for the moderate interpretation of Islam's relationship to other religions.

Bible Society Attacked, Multiple Injuries Sustained
On January 15 terrorists attacked the Pakistan Bible Society located on the premises of Trinity Church, Saddar, Karachi. An anonymous tip was received by police, warning that the Society would be targeted. Shortly after police officers arrived to investigate, assailants on motorcycles rode past and lobbed grenades into the society's reading room. Two Christian staff members, Frederick Masih and Peter Pervaiz, received serious shrapnel injuries as the windows were blown in. Exactly 15 minutes later, a high-powered bomb exploded In a car parked in front of the Bible Society. 13 were injured, but thankfully no one was killed.

Militant Islamic Group to Eradicate Christianity
The latest analysis report prepared by the Jakarta-based International Crisis Group (ICG) released early this week, stated that a radical new Islamic militia had emerged in the country. The newly established group exists in the Central Sulawesi province, and is highly concentrated in the Poso region, where ‘Kompak’, an acronym roughly translated as “Action Committee for Crisis Response”, is responsible for a series of attacks against Christians. Their members are highly trained in international militant camps in Mindanao and Afghanistan. ‘Kompak’ is involved in the Muslim/ Christian conflicts in the Moluccas and aggressively seek new recruits. They are ideologically prepared to launch large-scale deadly attacks. Central Sulawesi Police confiscated at least 19 bombs and five hand-made guns in three areas in Poso, and joint security personnel from military troops and a police mobile brigade seized at least 27 bombs, 17 live bullets, and a hand-made machine gun last January 19th in the village of Kasiguncu, in the Poso Pesisir sub-district

Gunmen Open Fire At Church Service-None Injured
At least three men entered St. Paul's Church (in Patoki) firing semi automatic weapons. No one was injured and it was apparently an attempt to intimidate rather than injure or kill. The problem will be if this crime is not dealt with harshly there are fears that the problem will grow worse. The alleged attackers (whose names are known) have repeatedly harassed the pastor and parishioners. This latest attack happened after Church officials asked the men to stop harassing the Church. The authorities are often slow to help the minority Christian community and are attempting to sweep this case under the rug.

A Refugee's Story
For the past three years, 15-year-old Helen James has been living in a refugee camp in central Nigeria following the death of her father, mother, two sisters and three brothers in religious violence that engulfed Christians in the state of Bauchi in June 2001. “I narrowly escaped death at the time,” Miss James said through her sobs. “Our house was burned down and now I do not have a place to go to.” Over 10,000 people forced to flee their homes during three weeks of Muslim-Christian bloodshed languish in camps nearly three years later. Their numbers are being decimated daily by disease, hunger and poverty, but they do not want to return home for fear of being attacked again by Muslim militants. “Where do I go to?” asked refugee Peter Bulus. “They have vowed to wipe us out because we refused to be forced into Islam.” Bulus decried the indifferent attitude of government officials toward the displaced, saying that nothing has been done to alleviate their suffering.

Another Christian Arrested Under Blasphemy Laws
In an apparent attempt to settle an old grudge, a Pakistani man who converted to Islam several months ago has implicated a Christian acquaintance for alleged blasphemy. The Christian, Anwer Masih, 30, was arrested on November 30 by police officials in Shadhra, an industrial town on the northern outskirts of Lahore. Two days earlier, Masih chanced to meet a former neighbor who had become a Muslim about three months earlier and changed his name to Naseer Ahmad. Since becoming a Muslim, Ahmad has lived in Muridke at the Markaz-e-Tayyabba madrassah, an Islamic school linked with the banned Lashkar-e-Tayyabba militant group.

According to local residents, Ahmad carried a grudge against Masih from an incident two years ago, when Ahmad (the Muslim man) was indicted for severely beating one of his Christian neighbors. Shahzad “Gora” Masih, 23, went into a coma and still remains paralyzed from Ahmad’s beating. Masih (the Christian) had angered Ahmad by encouraging the victim’s family to register a case against him, neighbors said.

Sharia Continues
Christian leaders in northern Nigeria report that enforcement of the Islamic legal code known as sharia is continuing despite protests and drastically impinges on the religious liberty of Christians. According to reports, 23 Christian women have been arraigned in Islamic courts over charges ranging from non-compliance with the Muslim dress code to prostitution. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said that the accusations of prostitution are false. “A woman not married, irrespective of her religious background, is seen by Muslim enforcers of the sharia as a prostitute,” said Rev. Linus Awuhe, CAN chairman in Zamfara state. Eight women in Bauchi state were arraigned in an Islamic court for being unmarried; they were reportedly required to pay a $300 fine and given ten lashes. Dr. Peter Jatau, archbishop of Nigeria’s Roman Catholic Church, told Compass that strict enforcement of sharia law could lead to “the incarceration of innocent Christian victims whose sin is that they are Christians.” If that happens, Jatau warned, “There would be increased tension, which would no doubt result in the occurrence of more religious conflicts.”

Church Attacks Continue
Muslim protestors have attacked at least five churches over the past three weeks in the regions of East Java, West Java and North Sumatra, Indonesia. A crowd of approximately 100 people attacked the Gereja Protestan Indonesia (GPI) church in East Bekasi on January 9. Government officials had given permission for the church to renovate an old house which they had used as a church since 1975. However, leaders of the local Amar Ma’arut mosque encouraged Muslim neighbors to protest against the renovations. Church members met with local government and mosque officials on January 12 and agreed to suspend renovations temporarily. Meanwhile, three other churches were attacked in Surubaya in late December and early January, and a bomb was placed in a church in Medan, North Sumatra. Muslim protestors forced the three churches in Surabaya, East Java, to close their doors. The pastor of one of the churches received death threats from the attackers.

Formerly Kidnapped Christian Teenager Goes Into Hiding for Safety
A Pakistani Christian teenager kidnapped for more than two weeks in November has been forced into hiding to avoid recapture by Muslim extremists. Leaders of a fanatic Islamic school have vowed to send Zeeshan Gill, who just turned 16 last week, to fight in Kashmir as a newly-converted Muslim jihadi (holy warrior). Abducted November 7 on his way home from school in Sargodha, the boy was taken to the Jamia al Qasim al Aloom Islamic school. Kept there under guard, Gill was forced to recite the Islamic creed, an act that makes one a Muslim under the tenets of Islam. The boy was beaten by his captors, who declared that they would kill him if he tried to run away or convert back to Christianity. In late November, four days before they planned to send him to Kashmir, the boy returned home to tell his mother what had happened. Mrs. Gill fled the city with Zeeshan, who remains in hiding at press time. According to Joseph Francis of the Lahore-based Center for Legal Aid and Assistance Settlement, the Gill family’s dilemma is not unusual among Pakistan’s tiny Christian minority.

Iranian Christian Convert Granted Asylum-Precedent
In a precedent setting case, an Iranian Christian convert was recently granted asylum in Germany due to the fact that he would face persecution from Muslims if he returned to Iran.
