Having the military on the border would require changes in the Posse Comitatus law as well as the buying at taxpayer expense the land all along the U.S./Mexican border, similar to a right of way for roadways.

Simpler less expensive methods would work .Change the law of the land that grants automatic citizenship to the children of persons in this nation illegally this ends the "anchor baby" scenario were the first thing the illegals do is have a child who is an automatic citizen then the courts are loath to deport the parents.

Second change the law that if you are found to have committed a crime in the U.S. & are here illegally you get the maximum sentence for your crime & automatic extra sentence for being in the country illegally added to the end of sentence,ie you do time for the bank robbery first then the time for being an illegal then from prison you get shown the border. No reunion with the family/friends, no parole back to the block,from the prison to the border for expulsion.

Third build Hadrian's wall across the U.S./Mexican border I am fairly certain we can find a good number of former East Germans with fence installing experience who would be willing to work at a modest price in exchange for resident alien status with the option to become citizens.

These measures are in fact "doable" it's simply a lack of will& integrity on the part of both political parties to enforce the laws & to preserve our national borders .
Sadly the day will come in the not to distant future when American citizenship will be good for one thing.
