Do you know where I can get abortion-birth ratios for a Sunday School class? I teach teens BTW. I have heard this class is the Missing Generation.

Hello AppyPappy,

That is a tough one. The numbers are underreported and California, the state with historically the highest rates stopped formal reporting some years back.

The general estimates of "surgical" abortion to live births ranges between 1 abortion to every 3 to 4 live births.

This in no way includes chemical abortion via abortifacient effects of many contraceptives or clinical abortions of embryos in research. In-Vitro Fertilization ranges between 20-100 conceptions for every live birth.

See: http://priestsforlife.org/news/infonet/Infonet03-02-04.htm Shows that among blacks the ratio is MUCH higher.

http://www.nrlc.org/news/2003/NRL05/world_abortion_estimatesa.htm

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss4911a1.htm#top
"In 1969, CDC began abortion surveillance to document the number and characteristics of women obtaining legal induced abortions, to monitor unintended pregnancy, and to assist efforts to identify and reduce preventable causes of morbidity and mortality associated with abortions. This report is based on abortion data for 1997 provided to CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), Division of Reproductive Health."

On http://www.silentscream.org/

There are two death counters, one for the US and one for:

Global count--Number of babies surgically aborted in the world since 1-22-73

1.359 Billion.

The global count adds about 1 every second.

It says that these numbers are based on statistical data from http://www.HLI.org and http://www.nrlc.org .

Some more info. Hope it helps.

ABORTION STATISTICS

http://www307.pair.com/ejs/plal1/abortion_statistics.htm

Abortion as genocide: One third (33%) of all abortions in America are done on non-white women, although nonwhites constitute only about 13% of the country's population. Since 1973, African-American women have had almost 10 million abortions. Current population of black Americans is 31 million. Nearly 80% of Planned Parenthood's abortion centers are located in predominantly African-American neighborhoods.

Teen Pregnancy and Abortion: About one million teenagers become pregnant per year. Slightly over half will choose abortion. The number of births to teens is on the rise. Some people who work with crisis pregnancies believe that is because fewer teens are choosing abortion. The number of teen pregnancies (age 15-19) is declining, ranging from 117 per 1000 in Nevada to 56 per 1000 in North Dakota. The Centers for Disease Control attribute the decline to a combination of more teens choosing abstinence and the increased use of contraception.

Abortion Rates: California has the highest abortion rate in the country -- 40 abortions per 1000 women (all ages). Abortions are more concentrated in urban areas and less available in rural areas.

Abortion Services: The number of medical schools teaching abortion procedures has fallen by more than 50% since 1987. There are 580 fewer abortion clinics in 1998 than there were in 1986.

Planned Parenthood: PP is the nation's largest abortion provider. Seventy five of their affiliates perform surgical abortions. In 1996 Planned Parenthood performed 153, 367 abortions and referred an additional 54,207 women to other abortion clinics, making Planned Parenthood responsible for approximately 16% of all abortions in America. The rate is declining slowly. The highest number of abortions were performed in 1990 (1.4 million reported).

The following information is from the Allen Guttmacher survey of abortions in the United States. For the information in its entirety, contact them at 120 Wall Street, New York, NY 10005. Please note that the Allen Guttmacher Institute is an affiliate of Planned Parenthood.

INCIDENCE OF ABORTION

49% of pregnancies among American women are unintended; 1/2 of these are terminated by abortion.

In 1996, 1.37 million abortions took place, down from an estimated 1.61 million in 1990. From 1973 through 1996, more than 34 million legal abortions occurred.

Each year, 2 out of every 100 women aged 15–44 have an abortion; 47% of them have had at least one previous abortion and 55% have had a previous birth.

An estimated 43% of women will have at least 1 abortion by the time they are 45 years old.

Each year, an estimated 50 million abortions occur worldwide. Of these, 30 million procedures are obtained legally, 20 million illegally.

WHO HAS ABORTIONS

52% of U.S. women obtaining abortions are younger than 25: Women aged 20–24 obtain 32% of all abortions, and teenagers obtain 20%.

2/3 of women having abortions intend to have children in the future.

While white women obtain 60% of all abortions, their abortion rate is well below that of minority women. Black women are more than 3 times as likely as white women to have an abortion, and Hispanic women are roughly 2 times as likely.

Women who report no religious affiliation are about 4 times as likely as women who report some affiliation to have an abortion.

Catholic women are 29% more likely than Protestants to have an abortion, but are about as likely as all women nationally to do so.

2/3 of all abortions are obtained by never-married women.

On average, women give at least 3 reasons for choosing abortion: 3/4 say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or other responsibilities; about 2/3 say they cannot afford a child; and 1/2 say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner.

About 14,000 women have abortions each year because they became pregnant after rape or incest.

PROVIDERS AND COVERAGE

93% of U.S. abortions are performed in clinics or doctors' offices.

The number of abortion providers declined by 14% between 1992 and 1996 (from 2,380 to 2,042).

In 1993, the cost of a nonhospital abortion at 10 weeks ranged from $140 to more than $1,700, and the average amount paid was $296.

WHEN WOMEN HAVE ABORTIONS

6 weeks or less : 16%
7-8 weeks: 38%
9-10 weeks: 23%
11-12 weeks: 11%
13-15 weeks: 7%
16-20 weeks: 4%
21 weeks or more: 1%

LAW AND POLICY

The most common restrictions in effect are parental involvement requirements, mandatory counseling and waiting periods, and limitations on public funding.

30 states currently enforce parental consent or notification laws for minors seeking an abortion: AL, AR, CO, DE, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, OH, PA, RI, SC, SD, UT, VA,WI, WV, and WY. The Supreme Court ruled that in states that require parental involvement, minors must have the alternative of seeking a court order authorizing the procedure.
