Scientist Steve Squires is present, but the main subject is the refinement of Opportunity's location...

Opportunity Spies Its Back Shell

From its new location at the inner edge of the small crater surrounding it, the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity was able to look out to the plains where its back shell (left) and parachute (right) appears to have landed. Opportunity is currently investigating the rock outcropping that sits inside the rim of the crater where it landed on Jan. 24, 2004, PST. This approximate true-color image was created by combining data from the panoramic camera's red, green and blue filters. (Feb. 9, 9 am PST)

They are just dicussing Opportunity's exact location.

Showing a photo from orbit of the lander and rover in the crater. The crater is very, very small and the lander is nearly 1/3 the size of the crater.

Now showing photo from the rover of the back shell and parachute.

Amazing what difference a rover makes versus a lander. Move the rover a few feet and it's as if another lander had been sent.

These press conferences are archived at CSPAN

Main science points at Opportunity: the spherules and matrix the spherules seem to come from are different colors, and hinting at different composition. Indications are that the matrix is higher in sulpher than any Mars rock yet analyzed.

My reception was terrible this morning, missed a lot of the good stuff, but it sounds like the rock is volcanic in origin!

Given that there isn't much else around (is this plain FLAT or what?), they've GOT to make a drive to the big crater eventually. Given the scale on the photograph, it's about a kilometer away.
