MASSACHUSETTS VALUES AND THE DEMS' DILEMMA
NY POST ^ | 2/10/04 | LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Posted on 02/10/2004 6:13:12 AM PST by Liz

Edited on 05/26/2004 5:19:31 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

The Post's criticism of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court's gay marriage ruling is simply nonsense ("Kerry & Gay Marriage," Editorial, Feb. 6). The Post notes that crime, drug use and welfare dependency are "directly traceable to teen illegitimacy." What on earth do the problems caused by underage, heterosexual premarital sex have to do with allowing committed, adult gay couples to marry? Nothing. The Post also claims that the Massachusetts court, by requiring gay marriage, turned "several-score centuries of venerable social practice tradition squarely on its head." It was not long ago that commentators said the same of courts that overturned laws discriminating against racial minorities, interracial couples and women. The Post should not confuse what is traditional with what is commendable. There is nothing more traditional and longstanding in this world than discrimination, oppression and prejudice. Michael Kavey New Haven, Conn.

Is anyone interested in a constitutional amendment to separate Massachusetts from the rest of the union?

Although impossible, that would have the additional benefit of finally getting rid of Teddy. What happened to the colony that gave us John and Sam Adams?

Not if you don't kiss off Vermont too!! I will have to declare my 6 acres of land in western Mass to be a separate nation state, like the Vatican, before you ditch them. Pay special attention to the ultra left of Northampton/Amherst.

Last one standing wins.

130 years ago, when Utah embraced a novel and unconventional kind of marriage, the Federal government sent an army in to change things, and would not allow the state back into the Union until it adopted a constitution that outlawed polygamy.

IIRC, Mit Romney's ancestors were involved in that dispute.

Now is the time, to simply suspend Massachusetts as a state, and rule it directly from Texas until it will produce a constitution reflecting Western [i.e. Judeo-Chrisstian] values.

I hear that CBS-TV's "Survivor" is considering a Texas version tentatively called "Survivor - Texas Style!"

Contestants will start in Dallas, travel to Waco, Austin, San Antonio, back to Houston and down to Brownsville on the border, proceed up to Del Rio, on to El Paso then to Midland, Odessa, Lubbock and Amarillo. Then turn back east to Abilene, Fort Worth and Dallas.

Contestants will be driving pink Volvos with bumper stickers that read: "I voted for Al Gore. I love the Dixie Chicks. Texas BBQ sucks, and the Alamo was a waste of time. I want Hillary in 2004, and I'm here to confiscate your guns!"

Whoever makes it back to Dallas alive, wins.

Way to tough for anyone to survive. But, I think Richard Hatch should be sent out on a test run.

Gov Romney has an opportunity to become a national figure by standing up and defying the Court.

But if he's like most of our Repub governors, cravenness and submission are second nature.

Yes. And continental drift along the San Andreas fault zone is going to get rid of northern California some day.
