No one heard screams? No surveillance cameras? No one saw a man going into the ladies room?

Chaos and terror indeed, followed by lots of abandoned headscarves and Qurans with no one willing to claim them.

No I didn't! I knew that he tried to attack a young woman several years ago but they let him go because she couldn't clearly identify him. Glad they got him. Apparently he confessed to his preacher. My husband and I had a big discuusion over this because he's Catholic and had this been a Catholic priest, he could not have informed on him. I guess shouldn't say this because I don't want to encourage a mini-thread on this topic.

Probably. It's a very rough neighborhood. But I've known very kind and nice people there too. There's thriving families there who desparately want the drugs to be OUT.

So, Philadelphians re-elected Street because....?

2 to 1 odds its drug and/or gang related.

Must likely .. there have been a lot of innocent people killed down there due to the drugs and gangs ...

It's really sad what's happened to Philly

None at all. When she didn't return, the grandmother got worried and someone went in to check. There's been several stories on exactly who found her, but no, I have not heard any stories of screams. Her pants were pulled down and they found marks on her neck and thigh. Poor child.

The shooting happened just after 8:30 a.m. in the area of 23rd and Cambria streets.

Neighborhoods don't get any worse than this. Okay, maybe the Mantua section, but this part of North Philly is basically as bad as it gets. Also, these were not "early risers" who were out there shooting it up. These animals simply had not passed out yet.

You're right. But I think that the public schools need conservatives; I really want to teach there. We'll see what happens.

I wonder if they're looking for a Lincoln Navigator, rather than a Connie.

I've known very nice inner city families. But I can't say much about inner-city voting patterns. I'm really angry about Street being re-elected. Our local NBC news recently found evidence about security irregularities at the airport here which puts us all at jeopardy. Street's assignment of contracts there has been a hugh scandal here. His re-election is a disgrace.

I was wondering that, too. A Jeep and a Continental look nothing alike but the person might know that it was a Lincoln. I am hoping there was a surveillance camera but it doesn't look good if you listen to the descriptions of the neighborhood some are giving here.

The victims were apparently caught in the crossfire as two men began shooting at each other from separate cars just after 8:30 a.m.

I hope they find them and make them pay the price.....

I agree. I rarely go into the city now. My Brother knows someone who lives down there, and they happen to be a Republican. He said that when he went to vote in the 2000 election, THERE WASN'T EVEN A REPUBLICAN OPTION! You voted democrat or nothing. And people wonder why people are leaving Philly as fast as they can. Between the corruption and the taxes, you don't stand a chance.

The corruption in Philly is much greater than most people realize, and it will not get better any time soon. Parts of Philly are already a third-world cesspool. Try taking a train from the northern suburbs. You will think you are looking at bombed out Baghdad. There are armed guards who walk students from the train to Temple University. Of course, there are some nice sections of Philly, but things are getting worse, not better.

I considered taking some education classes at Temple, but not everything I wanted was in Ambler. Plus, they had wacky policies that would have needlessly extended my required courses. I would be frightened to go in and take courses in the evening at Temple, U Penn or Drexel. Just isn't worth it.

Here's an update.  The boy's age has been changed from 8 to 9.  And they're still saying that it's a Connie, not a Jeep.  Oh, and the pols are showing up.

Child Injured in School Shooting

INQUIRER STAFF WRITERS

A 9-year-old-boy was in extremely critical condition and undergoing surgery this morning at Temple University Hospital after he and a school crossing guard were shot in an apparent crossfire in front of a North Philadelphia school, police said.

The two victims were likely caught between two men shooting at each other from separate cars near 23rd and Cambria Streets, said police department spokesman Cpl. Jim Pauley.

The shooting occurred in front of Pierce Elementary School, where the boy, Faheem Thomas-Childs of the 2200 block of West Lehigh Avenue, was shot in the face while in the school yard. The crossing guard, Debra Smith, 56, of the 2000 block of West Somerset Street, was shot in the foot, police said.

Police are looking for a gray Lincoln Continental that was seen fleeing the scene.

Outside the school, State Rep. Jewell Williams said, “It's a sad day for North Philadelphia when people are shooting in an area where children are walking to school. It’s real sad to see 50 children in school scared and crying. I've never seen anything like that.”

Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller said, “Schools are safe. It’s the community that is not safe."

A father of three Pierce students said his children “were scared to death.”
