The Earth-orbiting Hubble Space Telescope, once called the "best telescope in the universe" by astronomers and astronauts, will be taken off life support as early as 2007, NASA officials said.

The announcement came after a month-long battle by supporters who tried to revive the space agency's plans to engage in one last shuttle mission to repair the aging telescope. Under mandates from the Bush administration, NASA has to redirect its resources toward manned missions to the moon and Mars.

Astronomers would later say that the money was well-spent

Similarly, artists say the National Endowment for the Arts is "money well-spent."

Why not? Other people's money is always more easily well spent.

Bush is wasting our money with manned space travel.

Hubble will be survived by the new James Webb telescope. But, since the latter will operate using infra-red frequencies and the former uses visible light frequencies, Hubble will not be replaced.

Right on! We have already wasted too much money on manned space flight. Everything we have learned, we learned from the unmanned vehicles.
