The real one is the color image of the group, Fonda is in the foreground with Kerry somewhat blurred in the background.
There are several other images of Kerry in his days with VVAW, including on MTP and before the peace rally in DC.
However, the color image is the only one of them together that's verified.

What a shame, and Newsmax is such a reputable source who does all their own investigating and original stories.

C'mon, there's no need to slam NewsMax. A lot of news organizations were apparently suckered by the photo and were gearing up to run with it.

FR has a lot of people who do very good investigative work, and we have friends in the media that we want to keep, don't we? If we want to maintain a level of respect by the media, we need to self-police things like this, and save the other catty stuff for less important threads. Thanks.

You know, I really can't believe the Registered photo was mistaken for an actual event. It was an 1980's era Fonda with and early 1970s Kerry. Just because NewsMax was fooled (like that hasn't happened before) along with some other sites shouldn't mean that true political parody should cease around here. The one mistake I think that Registered made was not including his copyright tagline on the pic. The only other problem is he is good at what he does.

Does it stop with pictures? Parody threads from Scrappleface and BrokenNewz get mistaken for truth all of the time around here. Don't forget the splash The Onion made in China with its story about moving the Capitol.

In IE you can view the server address which originates a photo posted here by placing the mouse on the picture and clicking on "properties". Yesterday I did that with the Kerry/Fonda photo and saw immediately it was Registered's (members/AOL/registered/... or something similar). I was one of those who quickly alerted the Admin Moderator, and continued to do so as it popped up on other threads almost immediately. It was an excellent fake -- down to the back side of a newspaper bleeding through at the top of the picture (as would happen if you photocopied a newspaper on a good quality photocopy machine). He usually signs his pictures, but this time he didn't. And I agree, it was fun and it fooled a lot of folks who should have been smarter, but it could have done a bit of damage to us and our credibility if it been widely disseminated.

Did FReepers pass this to the press? Did they source it to the press as coming from FR? It was Reg that posted it first. Come on that makes it a 95% chance that its a parody!

We should have a rule here that any photo that is doctored have a caption either on the picture itself or under the picture stating that it is a parody and not a real photo.

I think you should enforce this rule by suspending anyone who posts a fake picture or a doctored picture without a disclaimer

Your choice. He's a good guy. By signing his name to the pic, we knew enough to ask if it is real or not.
