WASHINGTON - A key Senate committee will begin a long-awaited debate Thursday on letting millions of undocumented immigrants become temporary legal residents, an idea backed by President Bush but rejected by many Republicans and Democrats.

The Senate Judiciary subcommittee on immigration and border security will scrutinize competing guest worker bills sponsored by lawmakers from Texas, Arizona, Nebraska and South Dakota...

Top Bush administration officials, immigration experts and the owner of a Texas roofing company are scheduled to testify before the subcommittee, which is the first hurdle for any guest worker bill. No hearings have been scheduled in the House...

I'm betting that the owner of the roofing company will be really be unbiased. "I only hire them because it's a job Americans won't do."

BTW, I think in the contact info you meant to type:

Edward M. Kennedy, MA (Rank Democrat)

Yes, that's exactly what he'll say. And it's a lie! We hear call-ins to our local radio station every week day, pleading for "any kind of work."

Immigration continues in this country because it benefits the ruling elites. The economic elites like it because it depresses wage rates (and thus increases profit margins) and the political/cultural elites like it because it imports vast numbers of big-government socialistic voters.

But perhaps something good can come out of the massive influx of Mexicans into the Southwest. It may be a poison pill which will transform our Republic in a positive direction.

If the owner of the roofing company were honest, he'd say "I only hire them because it's a job Americans won't do for $7.00/hr."

Precisely. Another version: [If the owner of the roofing company were honest, he'd say "I only hire them because they'll work for the ridiculous low wages I want to pay them and I don't have to pay them no stinkin benefits.]

LOL. And what did employers do BEFORE the illegals started to become exploited by American employers?! Have they now increased their profit margins (maybe), at least at first before it became the everyday norm for many employers? Come on now, give us a break now.

Maybe profits aren't way way up, but at least these American employers can pay these "undocumented immigrants" a much lower hourly wage (30%-60% less on average) not including any benefits and thus pocket more and more of the difference.

I understand that many small employers today are pressured to make (more of) a profit but at who's expense?! And by breaking our nations laws and thus becoming criminals themselves in the process. Surely these employers are not suggesting that we are no longer a nation of law's?!

All I know is that there are now many employers who pay these illegals minimal wages because they know the suckers...oops, taxpayers will be forced to supplement the rest of the illegal's living expenses, they can EVADE numerous payroll taxes, not offer any benefits, etc......it's the greatest corporate welfare scam ever devised.

The only conclusion is that we are no longer a nation where equality under the law is paramount....there is a definite double standard at work here and the USA at this point resembles a banana republic rather than a constiutional republic.

No Borders - No Votes.

Mr. President Bush it seems, has launched the WOC. War on Conservatives. And a week does not pass without another salvo being launched our way. I can only guess that the White House would rather lose conservatives than lose liberals. So lose conservatives you shall.

I'm not so sure that was the intention of the Bush WH but that certainly is shaping up to be the net result with each passing day. It looks more and more like the Bush WH is sticking its fingers in the collective eye of the conservative voter (base) and thumbing its nose at them daring any of them to NOT vote for Bush because they would in effect allow the election of the "worst of the two evils". That will prove to be a serious mistake if they really do think that way. They seem to be more interested in the mushy middle and to the left of that group, at least more so than the right, their (vital) base.

The Bush WH just hasn't learned that lesson it would seem. Many of these conservative voters just will not compromise on certain issues, they've already shown that in the past on more than one occasion. IMO, this race is Bush's to lose and he is already off to a rather shaky start.
