The appendix relates to the immune system and controls certain bacteria in the intestines. If you have it removed it won't kill you but it still has a function.

The back legs on whales were once thought to be legs but then through further study it was found that they are needed for mating. Their funtion was discovered so obviously we would want to stop teaching children that they are something when they are not.

I'm sorry I simply can't seem to figure out a way to explain the problem with the geological column but I know that my science teacher was knowledgeable enough to know that you will not find it layered as such. I once watched a TV show where a paleontologist pointed out the fact that he needed to unlearn everything he had learned about the columns in high school because it was not so in the real world.

For that matter some "science" teachers have taught that toilet bowls flush one way in the Northern Hemisphere and the other way in the Southern Hemisphere. That is found in textbooks and by the way it's incorrect.

Why do these people want incorrect information in textbooks?

It is where I live, except that the column stops at about the Permian or earlier. (I live in some old mountains.) I have to wonder where your science teacher lived to have never seen a road cut with lots of layers.

Don't know if it works reliably for toilet bowls, but the coriolis effect sure works for cyclonic (or anticyclonic) storms.

I think that part of the problem here is a misunderstanding of the term "vestigal". A vestigal organ is not one that has absolutely no function, it is one with a function that is greatly diminished in importance than the same type of organ when found in other animals. "Legs" on whales and the coccyx on humans are greatly diminished in "functionality" than the same part on other animals, having diminished because over time they became less and less important to the survival of the species and as such they are correctly termed "vestigal".

But sometimes they're still legs. Also, shifts of function are an accepted part of evolution. Another instance would be the foreclaws of a tree shrew versus the wings of a bat. Same bones, new function.

Incorrect. The appendix possibly once had a function as an extension of the cecum in aiding cellulose digestion. As our diets became less dependent on cellulose containing foods, the appendix lost importance as a structure and gradually became vestigial.

As to its role with bacteria in the intestines, the appendix is actually a locus for bacterial colonies and encourages their growth. Recent longitudinal studies have shown this. (Appendectomy during childhood and adolescence and the subsequent risk of cancer in Sweden. Pediatrics, June, 2003, by Judith U. Cope, Johan Askling, Gloria Gridley, Adam Mohr, Anders Ekbom, Olof Nyren, Martha S. Linet and Boffetta P. Infection with Helicobacter pylori and parasites, social class and cancer. IARC Sci Publ. 1997;138:325-329). In fact, removing the appendix may be preventative for colon disease (Does Appendectomy Prevent Ulcerative Colitis? Reviewed by Douglas K. N Engl J Med. 2001;344:808–814).

Untrue as referenced in my earlier post. The back legs and vestigial remnants are from the transition from land back to water. You should read those creations sites with more discernment.

You will not find the perfect and complete geological column for a very obvious reason. This planet is active - volcanoes, earthquakes, meteorite impacts, water and wind erosion, tides - the surface of the Earth is in a state of geologic upheaval. It breaks. So you find pieces and out them together. It is a process of logic.

For that matter some "science" teachers have taught that toilet bowls flush one way in the Northern Hemisphere and the other way in the Southern Hemisphere. That is found in textbooks and by the way it's incorrect.

The opposite toilet flushing is an urban legend. Plumbing shape and design affect the spin and not the Coriolis force. However, I have never seen the toilet flush in a textbook and it wasn't in mine but the Coriolis force was. It does affect wind and weather patterns and even artillery fire so it does exist.

Why do these people want incorrect information in textbooks?

Some mistakes come in editing - there are few perfect textbooks, sometimes new discoveries are made in between writing and printing the textbook which is why so many science texts have addendums.

But you can't call it incorrect because it goes against your beliefs. Re-evaluate the rigidity of your beliefs or chose ignorance for yourself - do not try to impose it on others.
