Valentine's Day snow likely for North Texas

09:18 AM CST on Friday, February 13, 2004

From Staff Reports

It looks like a white Valentine’s Day for North Texas, meteorologists said.

There is a 70 percent chance for snow late Friday and early Saturday, said Greg Patrick, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The snow, from one to three inches, is expected to begin falling after the evening rush hour, Patrick said.

Friday’s temperatures were supposed to be in the upper 30s before dropping again to the 20s overnight.

The snowfall should end by Saturday afternoon. Any partially melted snow or ice on the roads could refreeze Saturday night, with low temperatures expected to hover around freezing, Patrick said.

Gearing up for the bad weather, Dallas road crews are prepared to deploy 30 sand trucks and 80 workers to sand icy spots, said Darryl Fourte, senior program manager for the city’s streets services department.

“We have pre-established routes where we send out scouts and if they say they see ice we send out the trucks,” he said. “We focus on bridges and overpasses first.”

The Texas Department of Transportation also is anticipating icy state roads, said Gary Bailey, assistant director of maintenance for the Dallas district.

“Our stockpiles are up,” he said. “We have our people ready to be called in for 12-hour shifts.”

Bailey said he doesn’t like the snowy forecast but is pleased that the worst should not occur during heavy traffic hours.

“We are glad if it does hit, it’s on Saturday and will avoid a couple of rush hours,” he said. “We don’t mind working on Saturday. It’s good for public safety.”

Sunday’s weather is expected to be mild and dry with clear skies and temperatures reaching the low 50s.

Monday’s weather also is expected to be mild, with highs in the 50s and possible rain Monday evening and Tuesday.

Good its after rush hour, already some light stuff sw..

My girls are really hoping to see some snow. And Saturday am is supposed to be all snow..perfect timing for kids. Our 2 year Old has never seen it since being old enough to understand.

If we do get enough i will pull them around with the car and the plywood sled.

We will build a Texas snowman, they are typically 6" tall and melt within 24 hrs.

Anybody needing to go to the grocery store, go early. Everytime we have a threat of snow or ice, there's a run on supplies, and it takes 30 minutes to get checked out.

Here in DFW is like Atlanta, a few snowflakes and everyone forgets how to drive.
I have a gallon of Carlo Rossi Chianti and a couple of pints of Godiva Ice Cream. Bring on the snow, I'm gettin' fat and happy.

North Texas?

It's snowing here now, and I'm only 35 miles north of Austin!

Being transplants from up north, (Kansas) my family is eagerly looking forward to seeing it snow here in Dallas.

Having seen enough news reports from the ice storm of last year, I brought my thermarest and sleeping bag to work. I'd rather stay at work than go out and play with the panic stricken drivers freaking out over 3 snowflakes on US 75 during rush hour.

Semper Fi and keep your snow shovel handy!

Yeah, I remember all the chocolate chip cookies - the break apart and bake kind - were always gone - bread and milk too.

Hey, to all my North Texas buddies. Miss you.

Lots of sleet here in Austin.

Not cold enough for it to stick to the streets but just the same I'm not going out today unless it warms up. Yeah, we're terrible at driving in freezing stuff but we rarely get any practice.

Dang but it's been a cool winter (not cold, but none of the warm spells we usually get), bad for my golf which is bad enough already.

We're at 180 inches for the season and still counting. I'm looking out my window at a 12 foot snowbank. The birds are going through about one jar of peanut butter a week at my feeder. Here comes the big Snow-Go that "eats" through these giant snowbanks. If you Texans need snow I'll be happy to send a few feet.

I WANT SPRING!!!!

The Texas democrats will probably blame this on Bush if it snows, but if it doesnt it will be his fault also.

W controls the weather here you know.

I bet its nice to see some REAL mountains on the horizon in NM.

180 inches of snow is inhumane!

I agree on spring, let the kids get their 2" then let it melt away. Then bring on the redbud tree blooms and the beginning of SPRING.

I'm not going out today unless it warms up.

Wish I could do the same, but the girls are in school and Mommy still has to bring goodies to the Valentine's party!

Luckily, I spend 7 years in Colorado and 8 years in New Mexico so I already have LOTS of experience driving in it!

Your right, it hasn't been very cold, but I hope we have 3 or 4 freezing days to kill off the crawlies before we plant the garden.
