Statement from Mystery Woman in Kerry Affair Denying story

"For the last several days I have seen Internet and tabloid rumors relating to me and Senator John Kerry. Because these stories were false, I assumed the media would ignore them. It seems that efforts to peddle these lies continue, so I feel compelled to address them. I have never had a relationship with Senator Kerry, and the rumors in the press are completely false. Whoever is spreading these rumors and allegations does not know me, but should know the pain they have caused me and my family. I am in Kenya with my fiance visiting his family, and we ask that the press respect our privacy and leave all of us alone."

So why didn't she stay home and say this? Why didn't mommy and daddy say this right away? Oh no, this hasn't put out the fire. It just fanned the flames.

We appreciate the way Senator Kerry has handled the situation, and intend on voting for him for president of the United States.

The last comment I saw from the parents had the father calling him a sleaze-bag IIRC, because he "hit on his daughter." Guess he's not so bothered by that anymore?

"I never interned or worked for John Kerry," she told AP over the phone. (me thinks this will come back to bite her.)

In a separate statement, Polier's parents, Terry and Donna Polier of Malvern, Pa., dismissed the "completely false and unsubstantiated" allegations about their daughter.

"We love and support her 100 percent and these unfounded rumors are hurtful to our entire family," the statement said. "We appreciate the way Senator Kerry has handled the situation, and intend on voting for him for president of the United States."

There is no evidence the pair had an affair, but her father Terry, 56, said: “I think he’s a sleazeball. I did kind of wonder if my daughter didn’t get that kind of feeling herself.

“He’s not the sort of guy I would choose to be with my daughter.”

Let's see, what does she get by admitting to being JFK's paramour:
1. No marriage to wealthy fiance
2. Her name is dirt for the rest of her life, like Monica Lewinsky

What does she get by denying?
1. Maybe marriage to wealth finance.
2. Her name disappears from the public medium, and she resumes a normal life.

Not a tough choice.

I think it is more about avoiding the invasion of privacy that confessing (if it is true) than money per se- look how Monica Lewinsky is seen. No woman would want to put herself and her family to that level of public scrutiny even if she really did have an affair or (more likely, IMO) he made unwanted advances towards her or even stalked her. Would you be able to stand up to the media's digging, never mind Democratic political operatives and others called you a slut, whore, etc? Remember there is still a double standard toward women in these situations.

Big time. If there were any real reporters left, they would jump ugly on this entire story immediately. But now that the media is for sale, they won't touch it.

Here is The Dallas Morning News/AP report
of this on their 'New this hour' link:

Woman denies rumors of affair with Kerry

12:18 PM CST on Monday, February 16, 2004

Associated Press

NAIROBI, Kenya - A woman who has been the subject of rumors linking her to Sen. John Kerry denied Monday that she ever had an affair with the Democratic presidential candidate.

Breaking her silence four days after the allegations surfaced on the Internet, Alexandra Polier issued a statement to The Associated Press, saying, "I have never had a relationship with Senator Kerry, and the rumors in the press are completely false."

Kerry already has denied reports that he had an extramarital affair. On Monday, his campaign said he would have no further comment.

Polier's statement was released to the AP in Nairobi, where the 27-year-old freelance journalist is visiting the parents of her fiance, Yaron Schwartzman, an Israeli who was raised in Kenya. She previously worked as an editorial assistant for the AP in New York.

"Whoever is spreading these rumors and allegations does not know me," Polier said, appealing to the media to respect her privacy and the privacy of her fiance and his family.

Polier also took issue with reports that referred to her as a former Kerry intern.

"I never interned or worked for John Kerry," she told AP over the phone.

The statement did not address purported quotes by Polier's parents in the British tabloid The Sun that were harshly critical of Kerry.

Kerry has won 14 of 16 Democratic primaries and caucuses, and is expected to be the Democratic challenger to President Bush in November.

Rumors of a relationship between Kerry and Polier first appeared Thursday on the Internet and were picked up by newspapers in several countries outside the United States. Few U.S. publications printed her name, however.

Asked Friday about the reports, Kerry told reporters: "I just deny it categorically. It's rumor. It's untrue. And that's the last time I intend" to respond to questions about it.

Regarding her silence until now, Polier said, "Because these stories were false, I assumed the media would ignore them. It seems that efforts to peddle these lies continue, so I feel compelled to address them."

By Monday, reporters and photographers were camped outside the Schwartzmans' Nairobi home, and at one point pursued the car of Yaron's mother, Hannah Schwartzman, as she left the walled compound.

Polier and Yaron Schwartzman met at Columbia University. They arrived in Kenya last October.

Polier graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., in 1999. She received her master's in journalism from Columbia in 2003.

Because these stories were false, I assumed the media would ignore them.

As an AP reporter herself, I find that statement either incredibly naive or incredibly stupid, even for a 20-something chick.

I do think there is a lot of back-channel communication going on here. She is a semi-public figure, being a reporter, so it is dense to think she can expect privacy (and yet a lot of the media see absolutely nothing hypocritical about this double-standard).

Depends on the definition of "relationship". Same story, different day.

Relationship in her context infers some sort of an ongoing affair. She did NOT say she never had sex with him.

I'll you this - here is what I can't stand about Dem leaders; this is probably not the first nor the last we will hear of a story like this. It just takes time and attention off the real issues. I think that bugged me about Bill Clinton more than anything else - all the time and money he wasted because he couldn't see his way to honoring his marriage vows. Just a huge waste of time for all involved. And, it reminds me how they tried to do this to Gov Bush at one time, and he had to say flat out to the press, no, he's never been with anyone, and that was carried on network tv. You'd never see a flat out denial like that from Dem leaders though. There's always another chapter it seems. Just a waste.
