Howard Dean returned home to Burlington, Vermont, early on Wednesday carrying a decision to quit his presidential campaign but remain in the race for the nomination, the Los Angeles Times reported in Wednesday's editions.

"Though Dean is not going to formally drop out of the race, he is going to stop campaigning," a Dean aide told the newspaper.

"The move would allow his supporters to continue to vote for him in the upcoming primaries and have a say at the Democratic National Convention in July," The Times reported.

Dean, once the clear frontrunner in the race for the Democratic nomination based on advance polls of voters, will make a statement later in the day about the future of his campaign after placing a distant third in the Wisconsin primary and now having lost 17 consecutive state primary and caucus elections. If he had given a decent concession speech, he could have held on in New Hampshire. While his winning the nomination was always a longshot, by winning NH he would have guaranteed a win on February 3rd and then victories in Washington and Wisconsin. That scream will live on forever.

...the famous Dean Scream. It's become a cultural icon. A lasting legacy. I hear it a lot on the Howard Stern show but also lots of other radio shows as well. A week ago I heard a funny rap type tune on FM using the Dean Scream.

I'm picturing Dennis Miller with his "Dean scream button"... He even had Chimpanzees hitting the button over and over. Extremely funny.

To add to your point,(Bush getting 8000 more votes than Dean), many, many communities (mine included), had nothing but the Presidential Primaries on the ballot, so many people that support President Bush had no reason to go to the polls (he ran unopposed).

I know that at the very last minute, I could not talk myself into voting for a Dem no matter what the circumstance, and since I was extremely busy yesterday, I did not go to the polls.

"...yet to see any politician really stick it to their own party when they've been railroaded out...
Pat Bucannan and Ross Perot."

Let me rephrase that statement..LOL..how about any dem who turned on the almighty dem machine? Other than Zell Miller, who hasn't gone GOP, I can't think of a dem who flipped party loyalty. Hmm...

I am talking about one who was in an election...and then turned on his party during it or after dropping out.

Since the last Presidential race, the FEC made a little remarked on decision that presidential candidates can now be paid a salary, from campaign funds, equal to the office they're running for. For President, that's $400K a year. Breaks out to $33,333 a month. It's become a pretty good job, running for President. Bet it's hard to give up. I'll be interested in seeing how much each of the campaigns have skimmed off in candidate salary from their donors.

I think he is staying in to see if there is a melt down.

He is encouraging "progressives". Liberals are regressive not progressive.

Everything Dean has done is now irrelevant EXCEPT how he raised money. That is the only relavency of Dean's campaign. Just the money.
