Father told son SUV to blame for mother's driveway death By Franci Richardson
Thursday, February 19, 2004The Kingston man police say confessed to running down his ex-wife in her driveway told his 12-year-old son - who tried to revive his mother - the accident was the SUV's fault.
``Their father said the wheel was turned the wrong way so (the son) blamed it on the car, and I don't think Joey knows any different today,'' the Rev. Cindy Shepherd said Joey Garuti Jr. told her. ``At least as of (Tuesday), he was just mad at the car.''
Joseph Garuti, 49, was jailed without bail yesterday after the charges against him were upgraded to murder. His ex-wife, Shirley Garuti, 49, a French and Spanish teacher at Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston, died shortly after her family decided to take her off life support Tuesday.
``That was very hard for the kids,'' said Shepherd of the First Congregational Church in Hanson, who was by Shirley Garuti's bedside when she died. ``Up to the last minute, little Joey was saying, `Mom, I'm not very patient, but take as much time as you need to get better.' He was hoping against hope that something would turn around.''
Joseph Garuti confessed to investigators that about 9:05 a.m. Monday, he mowed his ex-wife down in the driveway of her childhood home with his two children, Joey and Sarah, 10, inside, Plymouth prosecutor Michael O'Connell said.
``I hit her with the car,'' Joseph Garuti confessed to police, O'Connell said. ``I ran her over. We had an argument. I snapped. The truth is I lost it.''
Now motherless, Joey and Sarah are staying with relatives who are seeking counseling to help them through the trauma of losing their mother. They do not know police are trying to hold their father responsible for her death.
Joseph Garuti's mother looked distraught as she tried to reconcile the son she knows with the man who allegedly left his own two children motherless.
``I wish it had never happened,'' June Garuti, 78, said yesterday. ``I'm worried about the children.''
June Garuti mouthed, ``I love you, Joe'' as her second oldest of four sons was being led out in handcuffs and shackles.
Garuti's new attorney, Joseph Krowski, said he doesn't believe his client should be charged with murder because that was not his intent.
``At this point, there's really a question of malice,'' Krowski said. ``These criminal acts are codified by intent.''
During his alleged confession, Garuti did tell police he did not intend to murder his ex-wife.
``I didn't think of the consequences,'' Garuti allegedly told police. ``I had no concept of degree. I've kept control for 14 years. I did not want to kill her. I was angry, upset, and frustrated.''
moron
That poor kid wants to believe his father didn't intentionally do it.
Being in denial is a common human condition when it comes to faith in people ... or faith in general.
The deceased.
The guy is a scumbag. He' a former firefighter, yet, he offered no aid to his wife. He did however, tell his son to perform CPR. What a loser.
