Cancer patient whose toys were stolen over holidays dies
ABC13 Eyewitness News (2/20/04 - HOUSTON) We have a sad update for you on a story we've been following for a few months.

Steven Rael, the 13-year-old cancer patient whose birthday presents were allegedly stolen by a local cab driver has died. Rael had been battling bone cancer and died earlier this week while visiting relatives in New Mexico. Days after his presents were stolen, a generous Houstonian treated him to a shopping spree.
Taxi driver Cedrick Edmonson is charged with felony theft. Police say he stole the boy's toys.

I saw this story last night.
Despite my views and beliefs as a Christian, I have some decidedly un-Christian ideas for how to punish this slime.
That's all I have to say about that.

Well, if you can't trust a cab driver, who can you trust?

Stealing toys from a kid with cancer... that's a quick ticket to the top of almost any 'most hated' list.

In my opinion there is nothing worse than seeing a child slowly die from cancer. Some of them just fight and fight and fight. Against the disease, against the pain, against the death that looms before them. They endure poking and prodding and all sorts of almost contant harrassing things being done to their small bodies. The chemo, the transfusions, etc.
We talk of heroes in this country. About bravery. You want to see a hero? You want to see someone brave? Strength of being so deep and so strong that sometimes you have to turn your face away because what the child is going through is so horrible you can't even watch? Meet some of these brave children fighting cancer.
Better yet, help them. If you or anyone you know has not yet done so contact your local cancer center or blood bank and ask how you can get on the national marrow donors list. If you are someone you know is having a child urge them to save the unbilical cord fluid and have it frozen and stored. It may save a childs life someday.

My mother always told me that whenever she started feeling bad about her own life she would go to the children's hospital and volunteer for a few hours. You definitely come away feeling differently about your own problems.

Cedrick,
You stole first and foremost. For that you should pay back every cent.
You stole from a child. For that you should be ashamed.
You not only stole from a child you stole his birthday gifts. For that you should should hang your head in shame.
You not only stole from a child you stole from a child who was terminally ill with cancer. For that you should get down on your knees and pray you are never afflicted like this child was.
You stole the birthday toys from this dying child and now this child is gone. Passed away. Died. Passed over. Gone forever from this earth. For that I am grateful cause he will never have to cross paths with the likes of someone like you again.
This child has now seen the face of God and is happy and at peace.
For all the pain and sadness you inflicted on this child Cedrick...I don't think you will ever be happy or at peace from this day on until YOU meet your maker. And...I would sure like to be witness to that when that happens.

Yes and if you are ever in Memphis, TN...visit the St. Jude Research Hospital. The work they do will make you proud. The kids who go there will make you cry out of saddness for their illness and happiness for their courage. Yes, they are the true heroes as someone said. God bless them all.

I'll never forget how "normal" Abi looked just a few weeks before her death. And I'll never forget how it was not in any way normal to see that beautiful little angel laying in that white casket.
Sometimes the Lord wants the special ones with him sooner than we want them to leave this life. I don't completely understand why that's the case. But someday I hope to ask him about that in person.
