Actually, The President probably was in more danger, statisically. I think he flew Delta Daggers. Anyways, they were old intercepters designed to fly fast and furious (but were not all weather aircraft, but interceptors don't have a choice when to fly)... and were old then, but they were the best we had until the F-4 and later the F-15 came along to intercept bombers at 3am, in any weather.

I don't know what a Delta Dagger is, but my recollection is that he was flying an F-102, but by the time he learned how to fly, they were phasing them out, and he never saw combat. If he had finished his training 6 months earlier, he would have gone to Vietnam. I think Steyn had a column with this information in it.
