From Bay Ridge to Columbus Circle (where I go to school), it takes me 50 minutes to an hour by train.I used to work up by Columbus Circle and it was a 15-20 minute subway ride, depending on whether I caught the local or the express.
Now, what *might* be my next job is a 10-15 minute walk from here, in Tribeca. :)
Commuting from and driving on Lawnguyland was one of THE worst experiences of my life. Fortunately, the closest line to my dad's house is the Port Washington line, which is the only one that doesn't go through Jamaica and one of the very few that doesn't start out in Suffolk.

My first six months working in New York I commuted from Newark. Between the drunks falling asleep on top of me on the 108 (I think it was) and the guys grabbing my on the shuttle train, I couldn't wait till I got my first apartment. I didn't even know enough to turn the radiator on--froze for the first week until I mentioned how cold it was to somebody--but heaven heaven heaven.
