His crime earlier in life? He acted just like everybody else in Hollywood and did drugs. Hollywood had no problem with this...while Mel did his Judy Garland and brought money into the Media Machine. But now, whew boy! I guess to the movie mogals no kind of addiction is bad...except when you are "addicted" to God.

His biggest crime goes unspoken. He wrote, directed, and financed the film himself. That means he is no longer under their control, and they are no longer able to make money off him for doing nothing. A new film industry has just been born, one they were unable to abort in the womb.
