Speaking of proper flag display, I often wondered about the uniforms of our troops in Iraq, where the U.S. patch was obviously backwards...what is the deal??

When the flag is displayed on moving things, the field of blue should be oriented so it is leading the rest in forward motion. That applies to vehicles, uniforms...ect.

Is that a codified rule, or just something someone thought of and is 'winging it'?

It's called "battle flags". Think of a real flag, which is reall a standard carried forward into battle. In that case the union is going to be close to the pole, the stripes are going to flutter behind.

Which means that whether the patch is "backwards" depends on whether you're east or west of the man in uniform. The patch on the left arm will have the union on the left, as we're used to seeing it. The patch on the right arm is reversed. But it is really two views of the SAME flag.

I had heard that a flag isnt considered an official flag unless it's above a certain size. That's why those tiny flags are okay to not only wave in parades but stick in flowerpots or on top of cakes or even throw away.

It may not have been against etiquette to sign one, but I don't think it's a good example to set; next thing you know, people who don't know the difference are signing an official flag and that's defacement.

I will have to check with my top-secret, military sources as to how the regulation was established (which means I don't know the answer to your question).

I seem to recall that this recently was an issue when people were questioning the orientation of the flag on the right sleeve of our military's combat uniforms (with the blue field on the right). As one relative and one friend explained to me (one a soldier and the other a marine), the flag orientation was said to be the "always moving forward" explanation.

I shall effort to find out more the background behind this information.

This dog won't hunt. The flag is worn on the left shoulder of the Army uniform with the star field to the right. (To imitate seeing a flag from that side if it were being physically carried.)

Sorry for the caustic comment. I just went through something very personal where a Christian said, "that's ok, I can do what I want to do now because I have grace." I don't think it can be used in that manner, but then again the chruch seems to agree with them and not me.>>>
