LOS ANGELES (AP) Mel Gibson's gamble on ''The Passion of the Christ'' paid off enormously, riding a storm of religious debate to a $117.5 million haul in its first five days, according to studio estimates Sunday.
''The Passion,'' which debuted on Ash Wednesday, rocketed to the No. 1 box-office slot for the weekend with $76.2 million from Friday to Sunday.

I remember remarking to my brother about how this movie was being staggeringly under-estimated by the Hollywood 'elite' and stated, in all confidence, that the movie would top 200 million in US box office. Once again, however, it appears I was being quite conservative in my estimate...

This is going to be HUGE. The Latin America market alone will be at least as large as the US and the DVD sales will again equal theater numbers. Mel could be hitting a billion gross before this is over.

The world market will be huge. This is amazing.The Aramaic and Latin will work to the films advantage internationally, and translating those subtitles for international distribution should take at least 20 minutes!
