Let's get married
townhall.com ^ | 3/03/04 | Walter E. Williams

The Massachusetts high court ruled that people of the same sex have a right to be married. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and County Clerk Nancy Alfaro, in defiance of California law, have issued over 3,000 officially sanctioned marriage licenses to homosexual couples.

What are we to make of this? Same sex marriage advocates argue for a change in the legal definition of marriage so as to include marriage between male couples and female couples. Here's my question: Are homosexuals the only Americans permitted to change the definition of marriage, or do people with other sex orientations have that right as well?

Here's why I ask that question. Suppose a woman and a horse appeared before San Francisco County Clerk Nancy Alfaro applying for a marriage license, or it might be a man and a sheep. What argument might the County Clerk have for not issuing them a marriage license?

A much better test case would be incest.

Let two sisters or two brothers show up in SF to get married, and announce on the spot at the moment of truth that they are siblings. Catch it on video, it's a win-win for our side no matter which way the officials decide.

Even better, same-sex siblings. That way they can't claim a genetic reason for forbidding the "marriage."

We just need to FReeper siblings to fly to San Fran, and get in line. It could be a huge national story.

Not saying gay marraige is OK, but that line of argument is faulty: the premise of gay marraige is that they are both consenting, and legally reponsible, adults. a horse does not fit in this category, that would be animal abuse. same with a child, though much worse.

On the other hand, this argument does seem to work pretty well with polygamy. if gay marraige is ok, who is to say that 3 consenting adults can't marry? how bout 1 man with 100 women?

Look on the Jerry Springer show.
There should be some likely couples there.

Gay people should should be married if they wish. NOT TO THE SAME SEX PEOPLE !

This is a tough subject, I admit.

While I have never had or considered a gay experience, I have an aunt and an uncle that have lived for over 40 years with a gay and lesbian person. I never did get it or cared.

They are great people and my relatives. Do I look at them wierd. Absolutely NOT. They are just great people.

So, what do I know.. NOTHING.

Frankly My Dear, I don't give a damn. That is their business.

Oh, I don't understand it. But, like I said, I don't care.

How about those who want to marry themselves? Come to think of it when it comes to sex I have been much more accomodating to myself than my wife has....

The judicial side of the house has a DUTY to review laws to determine their constitutionality.

You may not like gay marriage, but the bottom line is that a strict interpretation of Ammendment I is that state recognition of marriage, in any form, is a violation of that ammendment.

I don't buy this, and I don't like it people spread ignorance. If all you can do is quote your Bible at the rule of law, then shut up. Our government was clearly intended to be secular and it only takes a cursory examination of the Framer's comments on Ammendment I to gain a complete understanding of that.

Gp

I used to not care either. But homosexuals (I don't use the word "gay", that's a good English word that means "happy and joyful" and has nothing to do with sexual perversion) are doing everything they can to destroy the traditional morality not only in this country but the whole world.

They are not tolerant, they can't tolerate any opinion different from theirs. They don't want diversity, they want all kids in schools propagandized to think that same sex acts are normal and healthy.

I am sick of it being shoved in my face and forced on everyone. My tolerance is gone. They can get back in the closet where they belong. Same sex acts are not nice, not normal, not healthy, and not moral. They are not equivalent to normal sex between a man and a woman, and no amount of doublespeak, sensitivity training, or Nazgul judges enacting law will make it so.

"If we and our posterity shall be true to the Christian religion, if we and they shall live always in the fear of God and shall respect His Commandments...we may have the highest hopes of the future fortunes of our country...But if we and our posterity neglect religious instruction and authority, violate the rules of eternal justice, trifle with the injunctions of morality, and recklessly destroy the political constitution which holds us together, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us that shall bury all our glory in profound obscurity."
Daniel Webster

"The moral principles and precepts contained in the scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible."

Noah Webster, compiler of the American Dictionary of the English Language in 1828.

“We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us ... to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” -James Madison

Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand.
John Adams

"The only foundation of a free Constitution is pure Virtue, and if this cannot be inspired into our People in a greater Measure, than they have it now, they may change their Rulers and the forms of Government, but they will not obtain a lasting liberty."
John Adams

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
John Adams

"Religion and virtue are the only foundations, not only of all free government, but of social felicity under all governments and in all the combinations of human society."
John Adams
