The water is so bad in South Florida.... PEUWWWWWWW. I used to live in N.C. and Maine... when I came to Florida I could NOT even stand the smell of this Florida water, much less drink it.
We buy filtered water from a machine at Publix Supermarket... 25 cents a gallon... just fine with me. We even cook with it.
Still... I sure miss the nice water in Western N.C.
To: LindaSOG
Have you tried the Publix water machines? It is not all that bad.

I only drink bottled water when I have to. We have a water distiller we use for almost all our water needs at home, but when I travel, I have to use bottled water. Dasani is as good, or as bad, as any other choice.
As for New York bagels, is the water the reason they're so chewy? That part is difficult to duplicate, in my experience. (If I had a nickel for every time I've told my wife, "These aren't bagels, it's just white bread," I'd be rich.)

I don't see what the big deal is - the source of Dasani water has never been a secret. It is clearly labeled with the source and that it is subjected to filtration.
Much a- do about nothing.

Then wouldn't you save money by filling a bottle at your tap and bringing it to work?

Have you looked at the laws in England? They are ten times worse than here.

Sure I'd save money. But the Dasani is convenient.

It's been my experience that things like tomato sauce, bread, soups, powdered drinks and even coffee, never taste the same as they do here. I am convinced that it's the water. I'm not a chemist, but I would hazard to guess that there must be some chemical reaction between the high-levels of chlorine and flouride vis-a-vis yeast (any Freepers with expertise in this subject wish to chime in?).
The water in most other places in the country (with few exceptions) is absolutely awful, and it's even worse overseas.
I can tell you from experience that I've cooked in places other than New York (I'm a chef in training) and no dish comes out the same, even if you used identical ingredients, as far as a "trademark taste". It has to be NYC tap water that is the difference.

Next they'll discover that Budweiser is some kind of beer. That's taking things a little to far. "Beer" is all in the eye of the beholder. /smirk

"I drink Dasani at work. The water at the hospital tastes like city water, to me, and the Dasani is closer to the taste of my well water."
It is city water.Does the hospital use a water softner. That is something I hate, the taste of water thats been through a water softner.
I live on a water district which is a 2500ft well, and no water softener.I'll drink that over bottled water any day.Dasani tastes better than most bottled water.

To: painter
I don't know if they use a water softener or not, I've got a 600 foot well, water tests out pure with the exception of the minerals, which I think give it the excellent taste...I've had patients bring water from home because they don't like the taste of the hospital water either.
A deep well is the best water.

Sadly, we Americans are far behind in the beer world. Though there are some rather good microbrews that I enjoy, I am particularly fond of beers found in the U.K. For a special occasion, a Guiness or Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout will do quite nicely. Really, I am not all that picky other than staying away from the Busch, Miller, Coors, and all other mass produced brands here in the US.
A Monty Python skit said it best when it asked why American beer is like making love in a canoe. The answer? It's F*&^*%$% close to water.

Sadly, we Americans are far behind in the beer world. True in terms of what the masses drink, but on the other hand, there are scads of high-quality brews readily available.
One thing I've discovered about buying good beer is that you generally have to get it from a store that does a high volume of sales. Otherwise it sits on the shelf for ages and goes stale.
To: civil discourse
That's not fair. Why'd'ja have to do that? Now I've got a craving for bread that will not stop. I'll try to assuage it with chocolate.

I won't drink bottled water of any ilk unless it's free. I have a well that is contaminated with bacteria after last spring's snow melted. Despite attempts to decontaminate it, I couldn't get rid of the bacteria.
As a result I had to install a UV sterilizer, a water softener and a reverse osmosis drinking water generator. My drinking water tastes better than any bottled water I've ever sampled.
Reverse osmosis is the process used by many bottled water companies to purify tap water. Read some of the labels and you'll find statements like: "Source municipal water supply, Ft. Worth, Texas purified by reverse osmosis."
