Gasoline prices set statewide records Tuesday in Nevada and West Virginia, and new highs were hit throughout heavily populated Southern California as that state pushed to within a penny of its record.

If I was a filthy rich oil sheik, I would much rather deal with Mr. Kerry and the Democrats than President Bush. In order to help Mr. Kerry I could see jacking energy prices and trying to help the Democrats screw up the economy.

Back in '59 I paid 25 cents per gallon but only was making $1.70 per hour. With inflation taken into the equasion we should be paying $10.00 per gallon.

Most of the price of a gallon of gas is from taxes. But don't hold your breath waiting for any pol to suggest a cut. I heard three retail clerks talking the other day about how we should tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Like that would fix everything. Sheesh. People are so unbelievably clueless. They just want what they want, and think they have a constitutional entitlement to cheap gas.

In 59, refineries were very archaic. I paid 29 cents a gallon at Mobil in 1972. I dont think you can compare business models from 59, with 2004.
Premium has in the last 4 weeks, gone from 1.79 to 250 in So. California. There is no rational reason for this!!

Actually, there are a number of rational reasons :) From OPEC, to refinerery capacity, to additive problems, increased consumption. Could be worse. Were you around for the energy crisis in the 70s?

I suppose it depends on your point of view: Whether you are buying or selling.

With the world economy beginning to recover, and the US leading the way, demand is way up and inventories are down.
To make matters worse OPEC has reduced output to deliberately drive up prices.
In any case my Merc Tracer gets great mileage, so these price spikes mean I might spend around $7 instead of $5/week on gas for my commute to work and necessary weekend shopping etc.

I still say gasoline would be cheap at $10.00 per gallon.

Okay. But it's a nickle a gallon or so "over there" (premium only) right now. So what were they paying in 1959?
