Some people are roaming Houston streets right now trying to hold people up and it would seem very willing to unload their revolver into non-compliant victims.
I saw this first hand last night in another part of town, similar circumstances although no shots were fired.
I was filling up my car at the Exxon on Memorial and Highway 6 around 7:00 PM. While inside the store a lady came in to report someone in a dark colored small SUV/Jeep (actually and man and a woman) pulled a gun on her while she was gassing up and told her to give them her purse. She said no, another car pulled up at the same time and the crooks got nervous and drove off. She said she thought they had a toy gun. Incredibly lucky of her to avoid getting shot.
I guess they came up on the HWY 6 side where she was gassing up because it would be easy off, easy on and a short trip to I-10 without a chance of being blocked in while trying to leave the station.
We called the police for her while inside the station and she filed her report. Be alert.

"It took the ambulance 15 to 17 minutes to get here. I couldn't believe it. Here in the medical center," said Ryan Snyder, assistant manager at Kubo's.

We were told to take extra precautions in our area, which is right in the middle of an area that has become hot for armed robbery. About fifteen places around us have been hit, which is so suprising because it's such a busy populated area.

15 to 17 minutes is a lousy response time for a GSW.

This line jumped out at me:
"Witnesses sitting outside one of the shopping center's restaurants said they were just having their first beer when the wounded woman ran up asking for help."
having their first beer at two in the afternoon? Odd.

1) This is the fourth largest city in the country, and we do have a share of scumbags.
2) These perps are running a large risk of getting shot dead, as lots of people carry both legally and illegally, and no jury here would ever convict the victims, and most likely would never indict them.

No offense, but it's a bit of a stretch to tie the two events together and call them related.
Both locations are not exactly what I'd call "bad" parts of town--the ExxonMobil station is in the heart of what we call the "Energy Corridor", home to many major oil and oil service companies here in town (BP's main campus here in town is about a quarter-mile from that Exxon station).
Rice Village is a pretty nifty part of town, too, bordering the Med Center and Rice Univ. In broad daylight, too.
Pretty gutsy.

The woman described the man who took her purse as a white man, about 30 years old, black hair, possible eyeglasses, and wearing a black jacket, black shirt and blue jeans. OMG! THAT'S M...

Texas has some pretty liberal (in the good sense) gun laws. Why would robberies be going up when your potential victims might be armed?

Sounds like Houston needs a visit from Geraldo...

It's a small world - I work with the woman that you are referring to and heard her tale this morning. I've sent her the link to the Rice Village story so perhaps next time she thinks twice about saying "No" to a man with pistol pointed at her (even if she thinks it is a toy).

Houston Car Holdups are happening right now Too bad these thugs haven't been blasted yet. Gun control laws and teaching people to be terrified of even having unloaded firearms in the home is a wonderful thing.

Just another reason to travel armed.

The 30-year-old woman was shot once, the bullet traveling from her left arm into her left breast and exiting through her right breast. She was in surgery at Ben Taub Hospital this afternoon and was reported to be in good condition. I'm feeling liberal. The perps should not go to prison because that is cruel and unusual punishment. Besides, they will likely prey on victims again and again. Give them a fair trial and a fast hanging.

the bullet traveling from her left arm into her left breast and exiting through her right breast. I know this is a serious injury and the victim has my sympathies and I hope she makes a full recovery, but... man, this has *got* to be material for some really great puns and wisecracks.

Believe me it's scarey. I left my 87 yr old Mother in her room listening to Rush, to make a HEB run. When I got back my son was sitting at my computer with both door s open. I asked him why he had the doors open, and how he got in since I had the doors locked. He told me when he got here the doors were open. I ran in the bedroom and there sat MOM with her head phones on. then I found the broken window, and one of our T.V's was gone. They had gone thru my BR and took my jewelry box. I guess they saw MOM and left. But, I am so paranoid, I'm afraid to leave her alone at all.

This is really unsettling - the violence in Houston seems to be getting worse. There have been shootings at two convenience stores near my home recently.
